There was not a dry eye in the house, not least because of the eye-watering beauty of having the score freshly created in front of us as the movie rolled.'
Classical Music Magazine review of August 2014 performance at Royal Festival Hall
David Lean's Brief Encounter, starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard with Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey and Cyril Raymond. Directed By David Lean and produced by Noel Coward. A Noel Coward-Cineguild Production.
Often voted the greatest romantic film of all time, Brief Encounter brought to fame Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with its lush emotional landscape.
David Lean s iconic film traces the affair of a married doctor and suburban housewife who meet on a train platform. They inadvertently but quickly progress to an emotional love affair, which brings about unexpected consequences.
Seventy years after its release, Brief Encounter still captures the imagination. It's the ultimate old-school doomed romance, a tale of rapture and agony, stirred passions and noble self-sacrifice. A vital ingredient in Brief Encounter's powerful impact and enduring appeal is the music. As well as being a hit itself, the film made a hit of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2.
Brief Encounter was screened with orchestra for the very first time last year at Southbank Centre, London, and again to great acclaim accompanied by the RT Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall this summer. Joining the RT CO is pianist Leon McCawley, who performed both in the world premi re and for the Dublin screening.
