IBC 2026: Riedel Implements Live Production Infrastructure at Edith Cowan University

Riedel Communications has announced that Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, has implemented a communications and production infrastructure connecting broadcast facilities, theater spaces, and other venues across the university.

The infrastructure is built around two Riedel Artist-1024 nodes used at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and the broadcast department, with Riedel Bolero wireless intercom enabling stage managers and directors to move between event areas while maintaining communication with production teams.

MediorNet serves as the signal distribution backbone, with five MicroN UHD units and an additional mobile unit handling audio and video within the building and supporting outside broadcast scenarios via fiber. MediorNet HorizoN connects SDI and MediorNet infrastructures with ST 2110 workflows, enabling two parallel broadcasts to run independently. Live productions from the theater auditorium can be integrated into the broadcast environment, including backstage communication, video, and audio.

Our partnership with Riedel has significantly transformed communications and coordination across our venues. Stage managers, front-of-house teams, technicians, backstage crews, and production staff are now able to work together through a single integrated communications platform, creating a more connected and professional operating environment. Importantly, it provides our students with the experience of industry-standard workflows and technologies that reflect contemporary professional practice, says Richard Reddrop, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Production and Design, WAAPA.

ECU also operates three Riedel SimplyLive RiCapture servers - two for 4K workflows and one dedicated to teaching. The system allows students and instructors to record up to six video streams simultaneously alongside production communications, with the ability to replay recordings to review decisions and identify issues during training sessions.

Artist, Bolero, MediorNet, and SimplyLive create a learning environment here at ECU that can be ideally adapted to the students' needs as well as to various production formats. Students are thus given the opportunity to experiment and work in a practical environment that mirrors real-world production workflows, says Chris Johnson, Director Oceania, Riedel Communications.

Riedel will exhibit at IBC2026 (Stands 10.A24, 10.A31, and 10.A38, September 11-14), including a Live Production Experience demonstration at Stand 10.A24 each day of the show.
