Systems expertise down to the smallest detail

The future of the automobile will be determined by the ongoing electrification of the drive train and the improvements being made to its efficiency as well as by the changed mobility patterns and continuous digitalization. As a world-renowned sup-plier and development partner, Schaeffler understands these challenges and will be showcasing products and solutions for mobility for tomorrow at the 44. Tokyo Motor Show. (Hall 5 East, Booth 5106). The paradigm shift in automotive manufac-turing not only increases the complexity, but also the requirements for a holistic and systematic way of thinking.

Using a transparent vehicle, Schaeffler will be showing around 40 selected products and technologies. The company uses this main exhibit to demonstrate its systems expertise down to the smallest detail, which is based on precision components and systems for engine, transmission, chassis, and electric mobility applications. The exhibit is complemented by a digital program that clearly explains the respective components on the screen. Using a transparent motorcycle, Schaeffler provides an overview of its products for the motorcycle industry.

Attractive technologies, customized to suit regional requirements

One of Schaefflers recipes for success is having a product range that is also tailored to the requirements and demands of individual regions, explains Andreas Schick, CEO of Schaeffler Asia Pacific. In Japan, the technologies for CVT transmissions (Continuously Variable Transmissions) offered by Schaeffler are highly valued, as are mechatronic actuators, such as the most recent technology to go into volume production, the eVCT, an electromechanical variable camshaft timer, as well as products for hybrid vehicles.

The products displayed in the transparent vehicle include, among other things, drives for hybridization with high-voltage as well as a 48-volt mild hybridization. The latest stage of development of an electric axle and how it is intended for use in both hybrid and electric vehicles will also be presented. This modularly designed electric drive in its most efficient specification also makes so-called torque vector-ing possible and thus provides hybrid and electric vehicles with excellent driving dynamics and safety.

Schaeffler in the Formula E: Electric mobility in its most emotional form

A further highlight at the Schaeffler trade show booth is the appearance of the Formula E driver Lucas di Grassi and his vehicle, the ABT Schaeffler FE01. The worlds first racing series contested with electric vehicles, the FIA Formula E World Championship, represents the most dynamic form of electric mobility. As the exclusive technology partner to the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport Team, Schaeffler has completely designed the engine and transmission in the racing cars drive train. The newly developed electric car celebrated its racing debut less than one week ago at the inaugural Formula E season 2015/2016 in Beijing, China. Lucas di Grassi finished the race in second position and is one of the title favorites. He will appear at the trade show booth on 3 November to report on his still very fresh impressions of the first World Championship race. Formula E offers us an excellent opportunity to connect the emotional side of the motor sport with the technological aspect, says Shinzo Yotsumoto, Managing Director of Schaeffler Japan. This attractive racing series brings emotion to electric mobility and allows us at the same time to use the experience gathered here for volume-production development.
