The Production of The Eternaut Contributed More Than 41 Billion Pesos to Argentina's Economy

Just one week after its premiere, the series has already become #1 on Netflix's global Top 10 list of non-English language series.

The launch of The Eternaut marks an unprecedented production milestone in the Argentine audiovisual industry. Beyond its cultural significance and its technical and artistic scale, the screen adaptation of the iconic graphic novel by H ctor G. Oesterheld, illustrated by Francisco Solano L pez, contributed over 41 billion pesos to the country's economy. This is a measure of its impact on GDP, which includes both direct production spending and its ripple effect throughout the supply chain.

Since its premiere on Wednesday, April 30th, the story of Juan Salvo has captured global attention, debuting at #1 on Netflix's Global Top 10 for non-English language series, with 10.8 million views worldwide. It also ranked in the weekly Top 10 series in 87 countries, including Brazil, France, India, the United States, Italy, Mexico, Germany, and Spain, among others.

An Argentine team The creation of The Eternaut began in 2019 in Argentina, when a local team was assembled to take on this ambitious project. The adaptation of this iconic work involved two years of script development and writing, four and a half months of pre-production, 148 days of shooting in Buenos Aires, and more than a year and a half of post-production. The project included over 50 locations and 35 virtual sets, involving 2,900 people including cast and extras. Additionally, more than 500 masks were created for the series characters.

In a production without precedent in the country, a large section of Buenos Aires was digitally recreated using photogrammetry and 3D scanning, combining drones, cameras, and various technologies to capture streets, trains, fa ades, and urban landscapes with millimeter precision. This technology not only optimized production but also opened a new paradigm for the Argentine audiovisual industry, enabling full creative control and real-time adjustments during filming. This advancement marks a turning point, with a direct impact on the sector's economy, the generation of specialized technical jobs, and Argentina's positioning as a regional hub for audiovisual innovation.

About The Eternaut

One summer's night in Buenos Aires, a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. Juan Salvo and his friends embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth. The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own.

This is the first screen adaptation of The Eternaut, the iconic Argentine science fiction graphic novel by H ctor G. Oesterheld, illustrated by Francisco Solano L pez and first published in 1957.
