The Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) will debate the advantages and challenges of body-worn video systems, along with numerous other topics, during the 2015 LEVA Conference & Digital Multimedia Evidence Symposium, which runs Nov. 2-6 in Clearwater Beach, Fla., at the Hilton Clearwater. The five-day event includes a mix of hands-on training, case studies, and interactive seminars, as well as an exhibit hall and networking opportunities.
The two-day International Body Worn Video Summit is being organized by Grant Fredericks, an analyst at Forensic Video Solutions who is recognized as one of the most experienced video experts in North America. The big push with body-worn video is public confidence, he explained. These cameras will expose excessive use of force issues, while at the same time highlight the significant dangers that police face daily. These are the best tools available to convey the level of professionalism provided by those who protect our streets.
However, the positives come at a price. We'll be looking at cost of ownership, which includes the massive storage requirements for all that data, Fredericks added. All body-worn video is subject to FOIA requests, which also takes considerable manpower and becomes complicated with privacy issues. There will be a representative from the federal government at the summit to discuss funding and how to reduce the cost of public disclosure, and we'll have leading manufacturers there to present advanced technology for the new body-worn video systems.
Beyond the body-worn video summit, the LEVA conference will include a three-day Courtroom Testimony for Forensic Video Analysts course, a two-day Reverse Projection Workshop, and a half-day Vehicle Make/Model Determination Workshop. Several sessions will focus on improving audio for forensic video analysis, while others will offer detailed Photoshop training. Other topics include video workflows, video interviews, and CCTV DVR recovery.
This is our 26th annual conference, and every year it seems the need for training becomes greater, added Jan Garvin, LEVA executive director. Body-worn video is a growing area of interest, but our attendees also have training needs for a variety of technologies. We know training dollars are tight with many public safety agencies, so we make sure the LEVA conference delivers value year after year.
LEVA has provided forensic video analysis training since 1999, and each conference session earns attendees hours for LEVA certification.
