Call for Trainers: Gender Sensitivity Training
BACKGROUND:
In Southern Africa, gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), which disproportionately affects women and girls, is among the most severe and widespread human rights violations and impacts almost every aspect of life and is further entrenched in society, cultures, and institutions.
In December 2017, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) started the regional Partnerships for Prevention of Violence against Women and Girls in Southern Africa Programme (PfP) in South Africa, Zambia, and Lesotho. The programme puts focus on strengthening multi-stakeholder partnerships for effective primary prevention of GBVF in the implementing countries.
One avenue of primary prevention is to address potentially harmful stereotypes, norms, opinions, and perceptions persistent in society about gender roles, gender violence and women and girls in general. One group of actors intentionally or unintentionally playing an important role in shaping these stereotypes, norms, opinions, and perceptions is the South African media sector.
In front of this background, the PfP Programme and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) have formed a partnership Flagship Project jointly with the government, civil society and industry. To shape and implement a process toward more gender equality, less stereotyping and an active fight against GBVF with and through news and entertainment media in South Africa - The Step It Up for Gender Equality in South African Media (Step It Up) Project.
OBJECTIVES:
To address the objective of capacity building in the media sector, the Step It Up project, in partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation and Gender Links, will finalize a gender sensitivity tool kit for entertainment media practitioners. The purpose of this toolkit is to guide trainers to execute the training to entertainment media practitioners. This will capacitate the participating practitioners to engage with their role in shaping societal norms, standards, and stereotypes through their content. Coupled with this, participants will be sensitized around sexual harassment and other practices that lead to unsafe and unequal working conditions.
A train the trainer workshop will be required. This workshop will ensure that the trainers who will implement the training will be equipped to execute the gender-sensitivity training programme for entertainment media and fully comprehend the training materials produced.
