DiGiCo Mixes A Royal Caribbean Anem

Billed as the world s most futuristic cruise ship', the Royal Caribbean International (RCI) Anthem of the Seas is also the world s third largest and is filled with technical innovations to entertain passengers. Its Royal Theatre is no exception. A DiGiCo SD5 was chosen to provide the ideal Anthem audio mix.

High quality entertainment is one of the 348m long, 18 deck Quantum class ship's fundamental roles. Facilities include a robotic bartender, skydiving experience, dodgems, circus school, surf simulator, climbing wall and a glass capsule on an extending arm that gives passengers unique views from 96m above the waves.

The ship's 1,300-capacity Royal Theatre is designed to be as well appointed as any high quality venue on land. RCI has an on-going commitment to provide a diverse entertainment programme, so a flexible mixing system was needed. German system integrator Amptown System Company (ASC) delivered the complete networking requirements for the, approximately 40 public entertainment areas and equipped the Anthem of the Seas with the very latest audio, video, lighting and control technology. The ASC team worked with specialist planners from RCI and shipbuilder Meyer Werft on the theatre's technical fit-out, with ASC sound designer Hendrik Maa en choosing a DiGiCo SD5 mixing package.

To satisfy the need to be as flexible as possible, 250 connection points are located around the Royal Theatre, achieved with the help of an analogue Ghielmetti Patchbay. This routes input signals to a DiGiCo SD-Rack and two SD-Mini Racks, connected via an optical multicore to the SD5.

Located at the Front of House position, the SD5 is used to mix both FOH and monitors, the FOH sound being mixed in 5.1. The system can handle 448 audio channels at 96 kHz. With the SD5 also offering three redundant BNC-MADI ports, eight analogue I/O and eight AES/EBU (mono) I/O, it is ideally suited to mixing a broad spectrum of events.

What fascinates me most about all our projects, and especially Anthem of the Seas, is the implementation of the perfect sound solution in the appropriate environment, says Hendrik Maa en. The premium SD5console and its fully integrated sound periphery correspond perfectly with the demanding requirements of the RCI show specialists, who developed a wide range of different day and night entertainment at the Royal Theater.

One of the reasons why I specify DiGiCo for offshore use is the excellent sound experience for the audience. The great sound of the SD5 is the result of its sophisticated Stealth Digital Processing technology, which inspires me a lot. There are a multitude of benefits associated with it; for instance, DiGiCo has achieved a high acceptance amongst a wide range of users and the SD5 is easy to use. Another benefit, which is extremely important at sea, is that DiGiCo consoles provide a high degree of operational safety for us. The theatre is currently host to a nightly licenced production of We Will Rock You and in-house show The Gift, as well as hosting classical recitals, movie showings, games, auctions and presentations during the day.

Currently on a UK-Canary Islands voyage, at the end of October Anthem of the Seas sails from Southampton to Cape Liberty, USA, from where it will be cruising the Caribbean well into 2017.
