Little League Baseball World Series 2026: ESPN Restores RailCam Coverage at Lamade Stadium, Upscales Cameras at Volunteer Stadium

The 12-day tournament receives the broadcaster's full onsite-studio presence in Williamsport, PA

The last burning embers of summer's flame can mean only one thing: the Little League Baseball World Series is in full force in Williamsport, PA. Coverage on ESPN rolls on through the championship rounds this weekend, but, throughout the 12-day celebration of the best in children's baseball, the broadcaster is giving the tournament the RailCam treatment for games at Howard J Lamade Stadium after a few years' hiatus and enhanced production quality at Volunteer Stadium.

We are very excited to bring back the RailCam system to Lamade after not having it for several years, says Meg Aronowitz, SVP, production, ESPN. The movement of that camera is providing incredible coverage of plays in the outfield, home runs, and the overall beauty of the venue.

Riding the Rail: An Infusion of Cinema Into the U.S. Side

Deployed once again for the U.S. side of the bracket at Lamade Stadium, the RailCam system is making some noticeable waves. Situated behind the outfield wall and supported by NEP Specialty Capture (formerly Fletcher) and AVS for RF capabilities, the rig comprises a Sony HDC-P50 shooting in 3X super-slow-motion. Running along a 100-ft. track between left field and center field, the camera provides enhanced angles on defensive plays at the wall and the flight path of balls hit for home runs and offers a unique vantage point for reactions from the crowd seated in the grass.

Lamade Stadium will host the LLBWS Championship on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.As with many ambitious camera placements, the operations team with ESPN had to be strategic with deployment. Due to the height of the outfield wall and the elevated graded area just behind it, explains Paul Horrell, manager, remote operations, ESPN, we needed to make sure we could establish a camera angle high enough to get over the top of the outfield wall while remaining low enough to avoid any game-related visual concerns and conceal the system as much as possible. Our Fletcher team was able to work with our Little League partners and come up with solutions to make it happen.

Closer to the diamond, another specialty camera has returned, providing improved replay angles. 4DReplay, a system being used to break down a hitter's swing mechanics or to highlight stellar plate appearances in a different way, comprises 50 Panasonic 4K cameras running along a 200-degree arc behind home plate. It allows a matrix replay effect and renders the video feed in less than five seconds.

Game Creek Video Bird, Magic, and GameDay mobile units lead the way in the broadcast compound.These camera systems, along with the others used for game and studio production, are once again being captured in 1080p HDR, the format having debuted during last year's tournament.

As we continue to move more content to HDR, particularly over this last year, says Horrell, it has been a great opportunity for the company and vendors as well to identify and work through the technical challenges associated with HDR, particularly with conversions and integrations with other broadcast partners. Given that all productions are being handled fully onsite in a shared compound and format for the LLWS, the HDR component becomes a more straightforward lift.

A Tale of Two Venues: Similar Camera Complements for Each

A delicate balance that ESPN has tried to strike every year is finding a similar production quality between the U.S. side of the bracket at Lamade Stadium and international pool play at the adjacent Volunteer Stadium.

We have made a significant effort to enhance the camera complement at Volunteer Stadium to match the level of play on the field, notes Aronowitz. Both stadiums now feature very similar hard-camera, robotic-camera, and handheld-camera complements. We were able to move the jib camera to right field and add a high-frame-rate hard camera in left field, enhancing outfield coverage throughout the stadium.

With the RailCam at Lamade, an additional RF handheld position was added at Volunteer. Both camera complements include POV locations converted into robotic cameras from NEP Specialty Capture and notable pieces of equipment: a Supracam four-point aerial, an ESPN-operated drone, Sony HDC-5500 hard cameras, Sony HDC-P50's, RF and standard handhelds, Proton POVs, and more. In total, more than 60 cameras and 16 12-channel EVS replay machines are capturing the action on both fields.

Perched on the hill outside Lamade Stadium, the studio location offers a picturesque backdrop of the entire facility in Williamsport, PA.On the audio front, a new tool is the Shure DCA901 Broadcast Microphone Array. Replacing a small group of lav mics in the outfield of Volunteer Stadium, two arrays produce up to eight isolated channels, with the A1 able to control the sensitivity of each individual mic. This deployment has greatly reduced the total number of microphones in the field and provides multiple channels of audio on a single cable via Dante.

Onsite in Central PA: Game Creek Video Trucks, Hillside Studio Set

With excitement for the Little League Baseball World Series growing each year, ESPN has brought nearly all its game- and studio-production efforts to Williamsport. Excluding two EVS replay operators in Bristol, CT, via the REMCO (remote-controlled) model for game coverage, operations - including all Viz graphics for both game and studio - are housed in the broadcast compound.

Game Creek Video has provided three SMPTE ST 2110 production trucks - Bird A and B for games at Lamade Stadium, Magic A and B for games at Volunteer Stadium, and GameDay for studio coverage. The trucks sit atop a sophisticated network of 43,000 ft., or 8 miles, of fiber connecting the entire complex.
