Sarafina!, a stage play written and directed by celebrated playwright Mbongeni Ngema, is set to hit Durban's Playhouse Company on Friday 15 July. Speaking to Daily Sun, spokesperson and former Imbewu: The Seed actress Mapule Ngobese, said the play stars more than 30 actors from KwaZulu-Natal and the main was to create more opportunities for the youth.

SARAFINA!' HISTORY Mbongeni Ngema's Sarafina! was first staged at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg in 1987 before hitting Broadway in New York two years later. The play features music by award-winning jazz musician Hugh Masekela.
The stage play, centred around the June 1967 riots in Soweto, has previously been staged at the Joburg Theatre and the State Theatre in Pretoria.

In 1992, the play was adapted into a film that starred American actress Whoopi Goldberg and local stars Leleti Khumalo, Somizi Mhlongo and John Kani.
SARAFINA!' HITS THE PLAYHOUSE COMPANY Sarafina! is set to open at the Playhouse Company on 15 July with its last show scheduled for Saturday 3 September. Mapule Ngobese told Daily Sun that their aim with casting was to open the industry and provide opportunities for Mzansi's youth.
We have new actors and those who have been seen on television before, said Ngobese.
She also told the publication that although the show is directed by another director, Mbongeni Ngemba is still involved in the production.

We expect old characters such as Leleti Khumalo, who played Sarafina and others like Somizi Mhlongo to grace us with their presence. Sarafina! Is a great education film and we will never let it be forgotten.
