Four Corners nominated as SA s most beautiful movie

With less than a month to go to the Design Indaba, Alistair King, chief creative officer at the King James group of advertising companies has nominated director Ian Gabriels hard hitting feature film Four Corners for the Design Indabas MBOISA (Most Beautiful Object in South Africa) Award.

Four Corners is the first feature film to be nominated for the Design Award, competing against nominees in art, sculpture, and jewellery. In his motivation for the nomination, King commented that the way Four Corners reveals Cape Town as a complex messy city with the idea of Cape Flats gangsterism interpreted as a game of chess .is at the heart of its beauty.

Beautiful and ugly

The idea of chess is a central motif in the structure, pace and design of Gabriels film. The strategy, tactics and end gambit required as a young boy - a chess whiz named Ricardo - negotiates his way through a week of survival on the Cape Flats is compared with those needed to negotiate one's way across a chessboard. Every street and corner is controlled by gangs involved in an endless round of turf wars. When it's time for Ricardo to make his move, he knows he cannot choose to stand still. The move he eventually makes will affect his life and the intersecting lives of people around him forever.

After watching a preview of the film Alistair said, Four Corners' is a spectacular film. Beautiful and ugly at the same time. The performances and direction are excellent. Composer Markus Wormstorm has also done an extraordinary job. The end line in the movie sums up the films creative mantra: There's only one rule - you cant stand still. You have to make a move.

Responding to the nomination, Kim Seeliger, Design Indaba Expo manager, commented on how diverse the perception of beauty can be: Four Corners reflects on the volatility and complexity of life on the Cape Flats, juxtaposed with a message of hope.

Delegates to the Design Indaba will get the opportunity to view, discuss and hear more about each of the nominees and will be invited to vote on each of the 12 finalists, with the winner announced at the conclusion of the Indaba. A special screening of Four Corners' will be held during the Design Indaba weekend on February 28th.

Four Corners' is the Best Foreign Language Film nominee at the 2014 International Press Academy Satellite Awards, due for selection in Los Angeles at the end of February. The film was also South Africas Official Submission to the 86th Academy Awards.

The film opens on 28 March in cinemas across South Africa.
