In honor of Indonesia's National Film Day on March 30, Netflix is championing the country's film industry by showcasing more local films. Further deepening this commitment, Netflix plans to host a series of workshops throughout the year for more than 250 budding filmmakers, kicking off with today's session on film production in collaboration with the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF).
Ruben Hattari, Director of Public Policy, SEA, Netflix, said, As we commemorate this year's National Film Day, Netflix reasserts its commitment to make Indonesian films available globally in 190 countries and enhance the quality of Indonesian movies by investing in its filmmakers.
At today's press conference in Jakarta, a lineup of the industry's renowned filmmakers shared their hopes and visions for the future of Indonesian cinema. The panel included actor and producer Prilly Latuconsina, JAFF founder and renowned director Ifa Isfansyah and producer Taufan Adryan of Visinema Pictures.
Netflix has also announced its commitment to continue the journey of several Indonesian films that were previously screened in cinemas, by making them available on its platform to get a wider audience. Content Lead Netflix Indonesia Rusli Eddy explained that this year Netflix aims to add more than 50 Indonesian films that were screened in cinemas to Netflix. Among these are Budi Pekerti, Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film, and 13 Bom di Jakarta.
Prilly Latuconsina said, The progress of the Indonesian film industry is deeply related to its human resources. I hope more and more emerging filmmakers have the opportunities to create and inspire for the industry to keep evolving. Moreover, Indonesian films on Netflix will reach a larger audience, such as those who missed them in the cinemas as well as international audiences.
Meanwhile Taufan Adryan noted, As storytellers, it's our wish to tell our stories to more people and hope that we can speak to a larger audience. A partnership with Netflix is remarkable as not only do we get the chance to get to places in Indonesia that don't have movie theaters, we even get to reach audiences outside of Indonesia.
As part of today's event, Netflix and JAFF conducted a workshop aptly titled What They Dont Talk About When They Talk About Film Production, which shed light on the administrative and legal aspects of film production, an area often overlooked in traditional film education curricula.
Attended by a talented group of 60 emerging producers and production teams, the workshop tackled a range of crucial topics. From third-party collaborations and music licensing to financial planning and legal contracts, the session was a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of film production.
Ifa Isfansyah of JAFF said, The four elements in the film ecosystem, namely filmmakers, the government, mass media and audience, are currently aligned by having the same vision. My wish on this National Film Day is that the four elements continue to be aligned as it's the key way to move forward.
Ifa added, With Netflix, Indonesian films will live longer as they are always available to their audience.
