Capitol Broadcasting gave away 5,000 azaleas to North Carolina nonprofits through the 37th annual WRAL Azalea Celebration. Distribution took place at the WRAL-TV Tower site in Auburn, NC, on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
Corp Estate Gardner Ken Sandy helped hand out the plants to the 60 nonprofits, schools and churches who were selected to receive them this year. Groups went through an application process, which included laying out how they intended to use the azaleas to enhance their properties.
I just enjoy the fellowship from the different groups and volunteers, said Sandy of the Saturday pick-up event.
Everyone is so appreciative, he continued. This event has happened for 36 years minus 1 year due to COVID thanks to CBC/WRAL to help beautify communities across NC.
Volunteers from a local scout group came to help CBC property management staff load the plants onto the trucks, trailers, cars and vans the winning groups brought to the distribution.
WRAL azaleas
Usually A.J. Fletcher Awards, named for the CBC founder, are presented on the distribution day as well. Groups are eligible three years after receiving azaleas through the celebration. However, because of the pandemic, the distribution did not take place three years ago. CBC property management looks forward to bringing that accolade back in 2024.
