Maandag: Genieten van de climaxWie ik ben? Rick Verwaal. Wat ik doe? Heb je even? Laat ik maar beginnen met mijn functie: Service Engineer bij Broadcast Rental.
Waar je normaal gesproken n discipline kiest, is deze functie toch iets omvangrijker dan gedacht. Misschien dat daarom ook wel de vraag kwam om De Week Van eens te schrijven voor BM. De week kon niet beter gekozen zijn, zoals jullie zullen lezen.
In diverse rollen voer ik projecten uit over de hele wereld. Zo ga ik een aantal keer per jaar als guarantee engineer mee met onze Flypacks. De inhoud van zo'n project is telkens verschillend maar het liefst doe ik dan toch muziek. Zo ook in oktober waar ik in Buenos Aires was om mee te werken aan een concertregistratie van Coldplay. Voor dit project stonden 24 camera's opgesteld, waaronder twintig Sony Venice filmische camera's, die in een meer-cameraconfiguratie moesten worden verwerkt.
Zo'n project bouwt vaak geleidelijk op: een interne prep met de laatste wijzigingen voor de set, laatste check/prep met alle collega's, waarna wij achter de vracht aan vliegen, om vervolgens in een megastadion alles gereed te maken voor de climax: de live registratie die wereldwijd te zien is in bioscopen. Een stadion vol enthousiaste fans, een prachtige registratie op het witte doek en dan begint voor ons helaas weer de harde realiteit: afbreken tot diep in de nacht en weer in het vliegtuig terug naar huis. Hoewel mijn werk veel binnen in de techniek is, kon ik de dag voor show toch nog even in het stadion de sfeer meemaken. Dan vergeet je soms dat je daar ook gewoon aan het werk bent.
En op ons werk mogen we ook zeker trots zijn. Vandaag, enkele maanden na dato, is het dan ook des te leuker om vanuit onze klant SR Films de uitnodiging te krijgen om de directors cut' van de show te komen kijken in de bioscoop onder het motto: nodig ook eens je naasten uit die normaal alleen de verhalen horen om samen te genieten van deze geweldige klus. Viva la Vida!
Dinsdag: WK tafeltennis
Je kent het wel, na een heerlijk dagje op het strand of bij het zwembad toch nog even een potje tafeltennis. Of ik goed ben? Nee, helemaal niet, maar het is wel een leuke bezigheid op de vele kampeervakanties die ik vroeg had.
Waar ik het alleen maar ken van vakanties, is tafeltennis in sommige landen enorm populair. Een typisch geval van een sport wereldberoemd in een ander deel van de wereld. Zo kwam ik enkele jaren geleden als LSM operator in Afghanistan terecht, voor de Buzkashi League. Een in westerse ogen wat barbaarse vorm van polo met in dit geval gelukkig een kunstgeit'.
Het WK tafeltennis wordt dit jaar gehouden in Durban (Zuid-Afrika) en ik mag met de flypack op pad. Deze modulaire set is eigenlijk het hart van de operatie vergelijkbaar met een OBV zonder wielen, vooral bedoeld om in het buitenland te opereren. Vandaag komt overigens nog geen tafeltennisballetje voorbij, maar ben ik vooral bezig met de voorbereidingen van deze 16 cameraproductie voor EMG. Met voormalig collega's op pad gaan, blijft leuk.
Komend weekend zullen we alles op zijn plek zetten in de garage en lopen we alle onderdelen langs. Heeft de klant nog een laatste update of wensen, dan hebben we alles te pakken voor deze klus. Hoewel er vast wel collega's te vinden zijn voor een na-ritje' richting Zuid-Afrika, is het bij dit soort projecten voor ons toch de sport een soepele productie te cre ren
Woensdag: Koningsdag
Hoewel ik genoeg dingen op kantoor kan doen en voorbereiden, blijft buiten spelen' het leukste van ons vak. De komende twee dagen mag ik in het mooie Brabant aan de slag voor Talpa Radio tijdens 538 Koningsdag.
Deze klus een keer niet met n van onze flypacks maar wel een volle bus EVS-apparatuur en een flink aantal RF-zenders. Een EVS is geen onbekend terrein voor mij. Toen ik in 2014 begon bij United dacht ik eerst richting camera te willen, maar al snel kwam ik er tijdens mijn korte assistent-periode achter dat ik als LSM operator zowel creatief als technisch bezig kon zijn. Met een IT-opleiding achter de rug kon ik vrij makkelijk alle verschillende systemen aan elkaar knopen.
Creatief blijven de Formule 1-uitzendingen die ik in 2016 heb gedaan de allermooiste. Zo vergeet ik nooit meer de eerste overwinning van Max Verstappen. Alle momenten snel monteren zodat ze in de studio elke seconde van de race nabesproken konden worden. Wel was het lang wachten op interviews vanaf het circuit waar op dat moment nog geen RF was. Niet wetende dat het jaar erop Broadcast Rental hierin verandering ging brengen
Deze twee dagen gaan de machines net iets anders gebruikt worden. Geen slow-motion of momenten in elkaar zetten, maar zorgen voor een workflow waar editors in Hilversum direct toegang hebben tot de opnamen in Breda alsof ze op locatie zitten. Geen runners die heen en weer rijden voor schijven of Wetransfers. Ook kunnen artiesten nog even hun optreden terugkijken en kan de radiostudio direct nummers klaarzetten waar de dj alleen nog maar op start moet drukken om alles in gang te zetten.
Eenzelfde workflow hebben we voor Talpa Radio bij Missie 538 voor het eerst gedaan. Met een geweldige line-up en solide draaiboek kan het niet anders dat er vette content gemaakt gaat worden!
Donderdag: Showtime
Na een gezellige koningsnacht in Breda is het dan toch echt tijd. De laatste controle van alle apparatuur voor de spectaculaire opening begint op het Chass veld.
Ik check nog even snel in bij de collega's. Niet alleen in Breda zijn we aan het werk, maar ook in Bakoe, Azerbeidzjan waar we zijn voor een nieuw Formule 1-raceweekend. Na de lentebreak door het uitvallen van een race kijken we of alle systemen weer gereed zijn. Ook daar draaien we gewoon' met zeven RF-camera's en een stuk of twintig communicatielijnen tussen het circuit, Hilversum en alle studio's.
