Doing the splits

We were recently interviewed by LBB Online to comment in their article. Why Post and VFX Studios are the Mafia of Filmmaking' which investigates the unsung heroics of invisible post' and the difficulties in getting recognised for this technically challenging, highly creative and often production saving side of post production.

One of our main points was how awards are judged and the inability to show judges the before' as well as the after. So, how happy were we to find an email from the British Arrows recently saying that this years Craft Awards submissions for Best Colourist, VFX & CGI will require a split screen of before and after as well as the final film? Very!

It can be frustrating to spend an enormous amount of time, and push your creative problem solving abilities to the limit on making the effects invisible and not be recognised for it. No matter how proud of a project you are, and how much time is invested, the ultimate goal for some work is seamlessness which is testament to good post work as these things arent meant to be spotted by the untrained eye.

We explained that there isnt often a VFX specialist on awards juries and without seeing the contrast between the offline or before' and final films it can be hard to judge against the flashy work where its obvious what has been created.

In fact it turns out that judges for British Arrows have also been finding it difficult to know what they are looking at, or for, in the entries for post production and the organisation has responded by changing the application process. Its great to see that the British Arrows are continually trying to update their processes and make judging fairer.

This will mean quite a bit of extra work for us all in post production in creating the split screens for submission but hopefully it will give opportunities to people not previously recognised and help the judges decide who deserves to take that arrow home!
