Call for submiions of proposals to provide Training for the Sediba Directors Programme

The NFVF, a national film body set up by government to grow and develop the South African Film and Television industry, funds and manages the Sediba Directors Programme. The purpose is to enable Directors to learn how to direct compelling stories that connect with mainstream audiences and their own creativity.

The training provider will be responsible for the overall delivery of the training and mentorship of directors on the above-mentioned training programme who will be selected from among those who are currently operating in the film and television industry in South Africa.

Responsibilities:

Develop the knowledge and professional practice skills of directors in regard to genre filmmaking to enable them to handle genre films effectively, making these films appeal to mainstream theatrical audiences both within and beyond the immediate South African marketplace.

Increase the knowledge and understanding of the director as cinematic storyteller, especially in regard to organic storytelling, character design, plot development, rhythm and tempo and how a considered use of image systems - such as visual tropes like colours, camera positions and movement, stereotypes, archetypes, sounds and music - can have a powerful role in communicating with the audience.

Improve the capacity of directors to work with actors in a manner that inspires them and encourages collaboration and valid contributions to the creative process while developing a scene for the camera.

Improve the ability of directors for working with writers and producers in project development.

Develop the ability of directors to produce mood boards, mood reels, written and verbal pitches that demonstrate clear conceptual thinking for a project and creates or enhances confidence in the director for fulfilling his or her vision and, therefore, the project's potential to obtain financing.

Develop the directors' understanding of the wider, rapidly changing film, television and cross-media market.

Maintain a rigorous process for quality control, providing necessary information in a timely manner to enable efficient management of the programme.

Take into consideration the NFVF's important targets for customer service and public funding accountability.

Education and Experience

Relevant postgraduate teaching experience in film and television

An in-depth and diverse understanding of the requirements for developing and producing feature films and the collaboration required by the three key roles, that of producer, director and writer

Knowledge of project management techniques and tools

Experience in the running of a film business with emphasis on project development and production

Minimum of ten years' experience in the film industry, including work with mainstream film companies and leading local and international directing talent

Requirements:

The applicant will be subject to NFVF criteria. Preference will be given to training companies that are accredited with the relevant authority.
