MPEG-5 LCEVC ecosystem support continues to grow and includes TVs and set-top boxes, gearing up for the deployment of TV3.0 in Brazil
New, never-before-seen six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) content powered by V-Nova PresenZ is streamed with MPEG-5 LCEVC on the NVIDIA technology-enabled pod
More LCEVC-enhanced applications in streaming, social media and cloud gaming are demonstrated with support in multiple open-source projects, such as Kyber, the latest by VideoLan.
The MPEG-5 LCEVC (low complexity enhancement video coding) Showcase returns to NAB (14-18 April 2024, Las Vegas), demonstrating LCEVC-based use cases across broadcast, pay TV, streaming, extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, pixel-streaming and more.
The showcase brings together LCEVC-enabled products from an ever-growing ecosystem of industry vendors and widely used open-source Projects, as detailed in the LCEVC Showcase website. Demonstrations present end-to-end systems for streaming and broadcast applications, with LCEVC showcased on commercially available encoders and decoded seamlessly on widely used mobile devices, web browsers, and in the chipsets powering TVs and set-top boxes.
For the first time, at NAB 2024, the showcase will bring together TV and set-top box manufacturers reading for the deployment of the next-generation digital TV standard in Brazil, TV3.0. Following key demonstrations performed during the World Cup at the end of 2022 and during the Brazilian Carnival in 2023, the showcase will feature several of the building blocks to be used in the upcoming trials during the Paris Olympics, which aim at putting on-air the first high-dynamic range (HDR) 4K LCEVC-enhanced VVC channel over DASH ROUTE. NAB attendees can watch Fabio Murra, SVP Product and Marketing at V-Nova, deliver a presentation titled Shaping the future of television: Brazil's journey to TV 3.0 and the Paris Olympics live broadcast trials. Scheduled for Sunday 14th at 2:30 PM in the Tech Chat Theater, West Hall, this presentation will describe the preparation and objectives of the trials, giving insights on the developments required by multiple technology companies to build an ecosystem for next- generation TV broadcast services.
The pixel-streaming pod, powered by NVIDIA technology, will demonstrate the unique capabilities of LCEVC to scale for ultra-low-latency pixel streaming applications, notably cloud gaming and immersive 6DoF entertainment, powered by V-Nova PresenZ. The content will be rendered and encoded in real time on NVIDIA GPUs using LCEVC and streamed in ultra-low latency to a head-mounted display (HMD). Taking place in the Tech Chat Theater, West Hall, at 2:30 PM on Monday 15th, Gianluca Meardi, General Manager V-Nova Studios Business Unit, will present Breaking Boundaries in XR: Introducing PresenZ 6DoF by V-Nova Studios. Having already clinched the Lumiere Award, this format is poised to transform virtual reality storytelling by offering cinematic photorealism coupled with six degrees of freedom.
Finally, Kyber, the latest open-source project by members of the VideoLAN ecosystem, will exhibit at the LCEVC showcase. Jean-Baptiste Kempf, President of VideoLAN, said Exhibiting at the LCEVC showcase is a great opportunity to showcase Kyber in the context of growing applications enabled by new technologies. Kyber is an open-source, cross-platform application and SDK, created to control any type of machine, independent of the hardware and OS, using high-quality video tuned for the lowest latency. NAB 2024 will demonstrate the upcoming support for LCEVC in both Kyber and FFmpeg, the building block of most web streaming platforms.
Guido Meardi, CEO of V-Nova, says, I am impressed by the strides in LCEVC adoption that this showcase is proving. The continued expansion of the LCEVC ecosystem highlights its accessibility and utility for media and entertainment applications and includes support on TVs and set-top Boxes. The new pixel-streaming pod, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, on the other hand, demonstrates how new content and forms of entertainment can be distributed at scale using V-Nova PresenZ and LCEVC technologies. It is great to see all these innovative technology vendors coming together in this showcase, we are not just predicting the future of digital media technology, we are actively shaping it.
