Ukraine's media to benefit from free online courses

A new programme by Thomson Foundation that benefits from months of research and piloting involving journalists from all over the world is available to media professionals in Ukraine, experienced and just starting out.

Built on a user-friendly EdCast' e-learning platform, the courses go beyond traditional theoretical approach and provide newsroom experience of international, national and regional media. Interactive videos make the training more tactile and engaging while real case scenarios give journalists the opportunity to practice learned materials.

The free programme of courses, part of the EU-funded Regional Voices project, is available from 8 August to 10 September and certificates are provided upon successful completion.

Ukrainian journalists can register for online courses in Audience Research, developed by Thomson Foundation consultant and BBC analyst, Anna Vissens, teaching the new principles of managing editorial offices; and Media Management in Transition, developed by Thomson Foundation consultant, Zoya Charles, teaching journalists how to conduct their own audience research and make editorial decisions on the basis of that data.

Olena Sadovnik, Thomson Foundation project co-ordinator, Ukraine According to Thomson Foundation's director of development, David Quin, there is a strong need for expertise on how to run a viable media outlet in Ukraine, without state or political support.

Based on over two years of in-field production and business consultancy support to media houses in Ukraine, we have developed a series of online courses to equip media managers and journalists with vital knowledge for improving their economic health, says David. This is so journalists can focus on operating in the public interest and cover crucial social issues, including the displaced and other conflict-related issues.
