CJ Cultural Foundation Awards Six Scholarships to Berklee Students

This year, longtime Berklee partner the CJ Cultural Foundation awarded its first-ever Presidential Scholarship to entering piano student Jung Ah Eun of South Korea. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, room and board, and a laptop and software, and is renewable over four years of study. The foundation, based in Seoul, South Korea, also awarded five CJ Music Scholarships to other Korean students. Eun and her fellow recipients, along with five students who began receiving their CJ Music Scholarships in fall 2018, were honored at a recent luncheon on campus.

Mirek Vana, global development officer, welcomed the attendees to the luncheon and highlighted the foundations work with Berklee. Among the attendees were Sangjoon Lee, the foundation's cultural director, and DongRim Song, the foundation coordinator. The CJ Music Scholarship honorees include piano students Soo Bin Ha and Dasol Kwon; guitarist Ju Young Lee; and acoustic bassist Hyungkyung Shin.

Larry Simpson, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, praised the student honorees for their talent and broad musical interests. You've got good ears and you're listening to good people, Simpson told the students. Keep it up. It will make you better players.

Jason Camelio, assistant vice president of Berklee's Office of Global Initiatives, presented the foundation with Berklee's Global Initiatives partnership award for its unique work in support of Korean students attending Berklee. Miky Lee, vice chairwoman of CJ Group and a Berklee trustee, and Jo Min, CJ Group's executive vice president, have been enthusiastic champions of the CJ Scholars program. Since 2012, the CJ Cultural Foundation has supported more than 150 students in the pursuit of their musical education.
