Improved environmental performance makes RT one of the greenest

Broadcaster launches internal Go Green Fortnight

In response to the changes in the economic and media landscape, RT has reduced its operational costs by over 130 million since 2008. RT 's environmental performance is an important part of this story. To mark its role as one of Europe's greenest broadcasters RT has launched an internal initiative, the Go Green Fortnight, to encourage staff to make RT even greener.

Efforts made over the past ten years place RT as one of the greenest broadcasters in Europe, resulting in significant cost efficiencies, and also positive environmental impacts. The RT Green Broadcaster programme, launched in 2012 (run in collaboration with Greenstar, the EPA and BAFTA) looks at every aspect of operations at RT , examining the use of water, energy, raw materials, and waste production, as well as biodiversity, transport and procurement, with the aim of identifying efficiencies that reduce their environmental impact as well as identifying cost savings.

Environmental related savings of 700,000 since 2003 were achieved through a range of corporate initiatives, which prevented more than 3694 tonnes of waste going to landfill, and elevated recycling rates to 75% for 2014.

Noel Curran, Director General of RT , said: Today marks the beginning of RT Go Green' fortnight in which we are encouraging all staff to help support our efforts following best practices in terms of recycling, reducing waste and reducing energy in particular. Broadcasting is an energy-intensive business and therefore developing good practices in this regard, is an important element of our environmental and social responsibilities. I'm proud that RT is not only becoming greener, but also leaner, ensuring better value for our audience, and we would like to thank the range of partners we have worked with for their support.

Speaking on the initiative, Kieron Phillips, Environmental Protection Agency said: The EPA is delighted to be part of the Green Broadcaster Project, and acknowledges the leadership role RT has in demonstrating how a large organisation can improve its environmental performance and also its efficiency and competitiveness. It would be great to see other organisations follow RT 's lead and have a go at it themselves.

New partnerships with organisations such as Leave No Trace' will give RT guidance on its biodiversity performance, help to ensure that RT is in alignment with best practice, and is also showing leadership where possible. New initiatives around water and energy reduction are also being implemented this year and over time these will generate further savings.
