After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Joburg Film Festival is returning to the City of Gold in January 2023. The festival will be showcasing more than 60 films from across the globe in hopes to attract thousands of film lovers.

JOBURG FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS The Joburg Film Festival was developed to create a platform to tell African stories and highlight local and international excellence in the film industry. To celebrate its fifth year, the festival will take place between Thursday 31 January and 5 February, with a lively audience and several industry initiatives.

The festival has been built on five main pillars, the film programme, the industry programme, the youth and audience development programme and the film society.

The youth and audience development programme focus on giving young filmmakers to work on their skills through training, skills transfer and networking with industry professionals.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE JOBURG FILM FESTIVAL This year, the Joburg Film Festival has introduced a new pillar, a newly developed content and a new-media industry market, JBX. The tool will provide a platform for rising content creators to connect with potential investors and sponsors for their films.

Joburg Film Festival's executive director, Tim Mangwedi, is excited to welcome back the event with an expansive programme.

The 2023 edition of the festival will once again attract thousands of visitors to Gauteng, with a focal point of activities at Nelson Mandela Square [in Sandton] that will include screenings and industry events, said Mangwedi.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS In 2019, the Joburg Film Festival featured a jam-packed programme with films like the 2019 film, Fiela Se Kind, Knuckle City and the American film, Midway being showcased.

There were also performances from Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo, songbird Zo Modiga and several others.
