Freakworks unveils new state of the art 4K post facility

Award winning Edinburgh post production company Freakworks has rebuilt its old offices from the ground up to create a new state of the art 4K post facility.

Looking to future proof the growing studio, which now employs ten artists in post, completing the cutting edge facility involved a year of work replacing everything down to the bays in the master control room and re-networking an entire building.

What we tried to create was a new, end to end 4K environment, said CEO and creative director at Freakworks, Hamish Allison. A problem many facilities have is that they are constantly battling the need to upgrade systems incrementally, as new and better hardware becomes available. You very rarely get the chance to start afresh as we did.

The Freakworks team has worked with a variety of clients including the 2014 Commonwealth Games Commercial Campaign, Ryder Cup, Heineken, Logitech and Chinese firm Ganten Water - for which they have recently completed a series of commercials. Weve posted three Ganten Water ads, and we are about to start work on our fourth, explained Allison. We were able to use the new 4K setup for the last two ads in the series, which has made a massive difference to our workflow. We were able to watch what we were doing in realtime 4K, and finish in 4K. Most of our commercial work is now also mastered in 4K because of the upgrade.

The rebuild of Freakworkss studio has so far involved the installation of three new edit suites featuring supercharged 12 core Mac Pros with 64GB of RAM and five of Blackmagics Teranex Express standards converters as well as a number of their Smart Videohubs.

Reasons why HD is chosen over 4K is usually budget and space, but the workflow at Freakworks will quite often work as an offline/online workflow, so we can now do 4K easily and cost effectively, told Allison. In the future a client might want to resize a project for a rerun or they might simply want to do some visual effects work, and for those scenarios we have a 4k pipeline that we now work to. Of course, another advantage is were really impressing a client the moment theyre in the suite. They see all the screens are 4K screens and the content looks better, every detail filmed is on show.
