Fall 06 Signature Series: John Scofield, Pablo Ziegler, Wang Leehom, Shankar Mahadevan

The Signature Series at Berklee presents an exceptional season of performances by Berklee students, faculty, and alumni, and world-renowned musicians. The fall 2016 half of the series features John Scofield's jazz renditions of classic country tunes; new tango by Argentinian composer Pablo Ziegler; Chinese pop superstar Wang Leehom; and chart-topping Indian musician Shankar Mahadevan.

All concerts take place at the Berklee Performance Center (BPC) except for Leehom, who is at Boston s Symphony Hall on November 13. The BPC is located at 136 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston. John Scofield: Country for Old Men Friday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m.

John Scofield 73 brings his lifelong love of American country music out of his toolbox in his Country for Old Men project, performing with several of his closest jazz associates: Steve Swallow, Bill Stewart, and Larry Goldings. We're going to turn outlaw' country tunes into jazz vehicles, said Scofield. We improvise while keeping the integrity, character, and twang of this wonderful American music. Scofield and company will sculpt jazz renditions of classic tunes by George Jones, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, Patti Page, and Shania Twain, to name a few.

Pablo Ziegler Meets Berklee Thursday, November 10 at 8:00 p.m.

A pianist, composer, and arranger, Latin Grammy winner Pablo Ziegler is one of the most important figures in Argentine new tango, the vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango and American jazz. After performing in tango grand maestro Astor Piazzolla's legendary quintet for more than a decade, Ziegler has led his own groups for more than 20 years, refining and reimagining the boundaries of the tango tradition.

Pablo Ziegler Meets Berklee will feature a large student orchestra performing Ziegler's inspired compositions and arrangements. The concert is produced by faculty members Nando Michelin and Oscar Stagnaro.

The Music of Wang Leehom Sunday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Symphony Hall

Chinese-American singer-songwriter and superstar Wang Leehom 99 sells millions of albums around the world and has 60 million followers on social media. He returns to Boston with a revolutionary mix of pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and classical and traditional Chinese music. Leehom will receive an honorary doctorate of music degree from Berklee during the concert, and he'll join Berklee musicians in a performance of his music.

Shankar Mahadevan Meets Berklee Tuesday, December 13 at 8:00 p.m.

Singer-songwriter and music educator Shankar Mahadevan's breakthrough came with his bestselling album Breathless, which held the no. 1 spot on all Indian music charts for more than 10 weeks. Mahadevan has performed with many of India's most famous artists including Louis Banks, Sivamani, Ranjit Barot, Taufiq, and Fazal Qureshi. He has also toured with John McLaughlin's band Shakti, whose live recording earned a Grammy nomination.

Mahadevan will perform with the Berklee Indian Ensemble, bringing magic to the stage with a spirited and uplifting performance. The Berklee Indian Ensemble is world renowned through live performances in India and Boston, and its stunning YouTube videos, which have been viewed more than 20 million times. The concert is produced by Annette Philip and Clint Valladares, codirectors of the Berklee India Exchange.
