Netflix ISP Speed Index for January 2021

A month following our relaunch of the Netflix ISP Speed Index, our monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best prime time Netflix streaming experience, 18 countries and regions made it into the top performance-tier.

Last month, we announced a new measurement that allows ISP performance rankings to include multiple ISPs in the same performance-tier for the first time, as well as multiple territories. In the month of January, the countries and regions included in the top performance-tier were Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. They all tied at 3.6 Megabits per second (Mbps).

Five individual ISPs saw the biggest gains, each rising 0.2 Mbps. Kuwait's BOnline jumped from 2.6 Mbps to 2.8 Mbps. In Latin America, Ecuador's ETAPA DSL/WiMax and Guatemala's Tigo Star accelerated to 2 Mbps and 3.4 Mbps, respectively. In Europe, Hungary's Telekom and Austria's A1 escalated to 3.2 Mbps and 2.4 Mbps, respectively.

Austria's A1 increase likely helped the country's overall average move up from 2.8 Mbps to 3 Mbps - the biggest surge of any country.

While Hungary's Telekom improved, the country's invitel service fell 0.6 Mbps from 3.2 Mbps to 2.6 Mbps. Elsewhere in Europe, France's SFR and Free services each dipped 0.4 Mbps to 2.6 Mbps and 2.8 Mbps, respectively.

In Latin America, Colombia's Claro dropped 0.4 Mbps to 3 Mbps.

Several services in Asia saw decreases, including Indonesia's XL Home and Japan's VECTANT, which each fell 0.4 Mbps to 2.8 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively.

Taiwan's TFN saw the biggest drop of any individual ISP, falling 0.8 Mbps from 3 Mbps to 2.2 Mbps. TFN was one of four services in Taiwan that experienced decreases. HiNet and Taiwan Broadband each dipped 0.4 Mbps to 3 Mbps. KBro fell 0.4 Mbps to 2.4 Mbps.

These declines contributed to Taiwan's country average dropping 0.4 Mbps from 3.4 Mbps to 3 Mbps.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is a measure of primetime Netflix performance on a particular ISP and not a measure of overall performance for other services/data that may travel across the specific ISP network.
