TC Electronic Announces DB6 Broadcast Audio Processor with Unbalanced AES I/O 25 Feb 2014
TC Electronic's Intelligent Loudness Management solution, DB6, has become even more flexible with the addition of a new version that features up to 16 channels of unbalanced AES I/O.
Depending on the integrated transmission system, some broadcasters may prefer to pass their entire SDI signal through a loudness management system, while others prefer to route only the audio signal through an insert point in their system. With the introduction of DB6 with unbalanced AES I/O, TC Electronic now provides this choice to all broadcasters, who are looking for the finest loudness metering and processing as well as state-of-the-art upconversion, downmix and lip sync.
DB6 AES comes fully loaded with 16 physical channels of unbalanced AES I/O, and by default the first 8 channels are active. Should the station need to utilize even more channels, a license for activating channels 9-16 can be purchased separately.
We are very exited about this expansion of the DB6 range of transmission processors, says Thomas Valter, VP of Business Management for Broadcast & Production at TC Electronic. Now, all broadcasters can choose whether they want to route only the audio signal through DB6 or not. Integrating DB6 to an existing transmission system at an insert point is a flexible option to have and it will surely suit some stations better than an SDI-only solution. We're happy to provide this option with DB6.
DB6 AES is an addition to the existing SDI-based DB6 Single and DB6 Multi processors. It is not possible to combine SDI and AES I/O within the same unit.
Intelligent Loudness Management
Just like the DB6 versions featuring SDI connectivity, the keywords describing DB6 AES are Cost-effective', High-density', Forever Compliant' and One-step Loudness Management'. Quite simply, DB6 is a TV and Mobile TV transmission processor that is able to handle everything regarding loudness in one simple process loudness metering at the input stage, up- and/or down conversion at any stage, loudness processing, on-line lip-sync delay, loudness metering at the output stage and logging of all relevant loudness statistics. In short, it is an intelligent one-step loudness management solution that will even keep audio at its finest, regardless of which platform they are delivered to.
LoudnessWizard: One Algorithm to Rule Them All
The LoudnessWizard algorithm will take care of loudness correction, upconversion from stereo to surround formats and downmix from surround to stereo. There is no need to know every detail of the inner workings of loudness standards apply the LoudnessWizard algorithm and let it combine and properly chain together multiple processes on the fly and without any latency penalty. Once configured, it can literally be left alone to work its wonders effectively as well as transparently; though the user also may let it know if a program has already been normalized or processed.
Further, the LoudnessWizard algorithm is able to automatically detect the nature of any incoming signal and act accordingly as defined by the engineer. It also integrates multichannel TC Delay, which may be adjusted live without artifacts and used for lip-sync, profanity prevention and loudness processing look-ahead.
LM6 Radar Loudness Meter
Loudness metering at the input and output stages is handled by TC Electronic's innovative and highly regarded Radar Loudness Meter. It is able to capture the essence of any loudness landscape at a glance for a complete and instant overview that includes Loudness History (S), Momentary Loudness (M), True-peak Level plus two user-definable parameters such as e.g. Program Loudness (I) and Loudness Range (LRA). Both Radar Meters even include a Statistics page showing all numbers and details at once.
Forever Compliant
All loudness legislation relies on one or more broadcast standards. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to broadcasters that their loudness management solution is compliant with whatever standard has been chosen in their country or region. DB6 is compliant with all major broadcast standards, including ITU BS.1770-3, ATSC A/85, EBU R128, ARIB TR-B32, OP-59 and more. It even comes fully loaded with presets tailored specifically with each of these standards in mind. Finally, TC remains focused on keeping up to date with revisions of major loudness standards that may be released in the future to ensure that its customers will always be able to transmit within these recommendations or regulations.
