CBC Sponsors Chuck Stone Summer Program for High School Seniors at UNC-CH Journalism School

The 2022 Scholars for the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education & Media at UNC-CH

Capitol Broadcasting Company once again proudly sponsored a learning program for diverse students interested in exploring a career in journalism. Twelve rising high school seniors were selected to take part in the 2022 Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Media which took place on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill in June.

Livis James Freeman, Jr, Associate Professor for the UNC-CH Hussman School of Journalism and Media is the Director of the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Media and Education.

The Chuck Stone Summer Program was held on June 26-29 and featured one of the most diverse classes in its 16-year history, he told Capcom. Four of our 12 scholars were from out-of-state (Maryland, Virginia, and New York).

The program was able to take place in person for the first time since 2019.

This year's theme was what it means to be a true citizen of the world', said Freeman. Chuck Stone often encouraged students to be true citizens of the world and to embrace as many people who are different from them as possible. This year's scholars participated in multiple educational sessions that included photojournalism, broadcast journalism, investigative journalism, usage and grammar, public relations, career development and careers in sports journalism.

Rising high school seniors applied for the program and were selected from a large pool of candidates. Essays, grades and recommendations from their high school counselors played a big role in their selection to participate.

The students stayed on campus for the four days of the program, fully embedded in learning.

Janie Sircey, Digital Marketing Manager at LEGO and a UNC and Chuck Stone Program alum, came back to speak as the keynote for the closing ceremony.

The program thanks its amazing program counselors, Hussman PhD. Students, Larisa Anderson and Emily Galper, concluded Freeman. They also thank Jan Yopp, Erica Perel, Christy and Gary Kirk, Monica Hill, Jeyhoun Allebough, Courtney Mitchell and the Daily Tar Heel, program alums, and program sponsors the Capitol Broadcasting, the Gannett Foundation and FOX Sports.
