The NFVF to host South African Day at the Pan African Film Festival --

The National Film and Video Foundation will host South African Day at the 22nd Annual Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) taking place at the Baldwins Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles from the 6th to 17th of February 2014. The festival is dedicated to racial tolerance and cultural understanding among people of African descent through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression.

South African Day, scheduled to take place on the 15th of February, will include a forum discussion on opportunities for filming in South Africa and the promotion of cross cultural collaborations between SA filmmakers and African American filmmakers. The panel members at the forum will be Teddy Mattera (Max and Mona), Hlomla Dandala (Jacob s Cross, End Game) and Khethiwe Ngcobo (Gog Helen).

The forum will also feature special screenings of two SA films as part of the 20 Years of Democracy Celebrations. The films Sobukwe, A Great Soul directed by Mickey Madoda Dube and State of Violence directed by Khalo Matabane showcase the strides made by talented black directors since the attainment of democracy in 1994.

We are honoured to participate at this year s PAFF and to mark the 20 years of Democracy Celebrations; we will use the South African Day to showcase how far we have come as a country since 1994. As this is an African film festival, is relevant that we also celebrate the journey that our filmmakers from previously disadvantaged groups have been through, by showcasing their stories. We will also utilise the forum to promote South Africa as a filmmaking destination and to showcase our cross cultural diversity which makes it possible to tell any African story using our land as location, says Clarence Hamilton, Head of Production and Development at NFVF.

In addition to the two local films that will be screened at the SA Day event, the festival is also screening a total of 12 films made by South African filmmakers. Of Good Report by Jahmil XT Qubeka has been selected as the festival s opening film. Other films are animation feature Khumba by Anthony Silverstone, Ithala (Between Friends) by Zuko Nodada, African Cypher by Bryan Little, Dance Up From The Street by Peter Goldsmid, Security by Mark Middlewick, The Forgotten Kingdom by Andrew Mudge, Freedom Road by Shane Vermooten, Hitting the Waves by Omelga Mthiyane, Kanye Kanye by Miklas Manneke, Blood Tokoloshe by Jordan Harland and Felix by Roberta Durrant.
