Earlier this year we hosted THE PRISM, our annual industry forum, which since 2014 has provided the a rare opportunity for leaders from across the screen sector to come together to share challenges, ideas and priorities for the future.
Ahead of hosting a PRISM follow up event in Perth today, weve released two videos in which participants share their views on outcomes of the day and the policy agenda for the years ahead.
THE PRISM, as well as with ongoing industry engagement, has been critical in framing Screen Producers Australia's policy agenda. I'm in Perth with our Manager, Strategy and Operations, Matthew Hancock, to continue the discussion from a Western Australia perspective, highlighting our current policy priorities in relation to the development, production and distribution of content on big and small screens, our CEO, Matthew Deaner said.
The videos feature interviews with several industry leaders including Head of Programming of ABC Television Brendan Dahill, actors Geoff Morell and Simon Burke, Screen Victoria CEO Jenni Tosi, Fox Studios CEO Wayne Borg, Ausfilm CEO Deb Richards, producers Kate Croser, Brian Rosen and Stephen Luby, Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Viera, President of the Australian Screen Sound Guild Doron Kipen, and CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation Annabelle Sheehan.
Mr Deaner said that further PRISM follow up events will be held later this year in Adelaide with other cities and dates to be confirmed.
The initiative has been tremendously successful in coalescing Screen Producers Australia's policy agenda and priorities. We echo the views of a wide range of industry stakeholders expressed at the event in calling on Government, opposition and the minor parties to develop a holistic arts and communications screen policy ahead of the next election, Mr Deaner said.
Mr Deaner said that the independent production sector is highly competitive but also affected greatly by Government policy mechanisms across the arts and communications portfolios. These businesses are characterised by their professionalism, entrepreneurial spirit and quality of output. They operate in a media landscape that is equally characterised by its dynamism, in which technological changes are giving rise to changes in production, distribution, consumption and business models. It is critical therefore that the industry is deeply engaged with the Government, opposition and minor parties in the development of policies that affect our industry.
We have set out an ambitious range of policy reforms to ensure Australia's independent production sector, which currently accounts for $1.7 billion worth of production activity annually, continues to grow, export and innovate.
