The Los Angeles Section of the Audio Engineering Society and the Hollywood Section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE ) will host a joint meeting this month exploring sound production for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation's Golden Globe -winning feature film Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse. The meeting is slated for Thursday, January 31 at the Sony Pictures Studio lot in Culver City, California.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that's the first of its kind. Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask. In addition to the Golden Globe win, the film has received broad critical acclaim, including a New York Film Critics Circle win for Best Animated Feature and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association win for Best Animation.
The meeting will begin with a panel discussion followed by a screening of the feature film. Panelists will include Supervising Sound Editors Geoffrey Rubay and Curt Schulkey, Re-Recording Mixers Tony Lamberti and Michael Semanick, and Associate Editor (Picture) Vivek Sharma. Carolyn Giardina of The Hollywood Reporter will moderate the discussion. (Participants subject to change.)
The meeting will be held in Sony Pictures' Kim Novak Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the one-hour panel discussion beginning at 7:30 p.m., followed by the screening.

Panelists
Geoffrey Rubay (supervising sound editor) has worked in motion picture and television sound for more than 20 years. His more than 100 credits include Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse, 22 Jump Street, Hotel Transylvania, The Brink and Mad Men. He is the winner of two Primetime Emmy Awards for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself. In addition, he has received 11 Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Award nominations. Whether working as an editor, designer, supervisor or re-recording mixer, Rubay always welcomes a new artistic challenge.
Curt Schulkey (supervising sound editor) has more than 100 feature film credits as an editor, supervising editor and/or re-recording mixer. He is known for dialogue and ADR editing, and creature/character development. He has created vocal personalities for dogs, elephants, horses, robots, apes, aliens and even humans. His notable credits include The Empire Strikes Back, The Iron Giant, Insomnia, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Fifth Element, Sicario and Mad Max: Fury Road. He earned an Emmy Award for his work on the television mini-series John Adams. Schulkey teaches a course in post-production sound at the School of Film and Television at Loyola Marymount University.
Tony Lamberti (re-recording mixer) has worked in motion picture and television sound for more than 30 years. He is a two-time Emmy Award winner and earned an Academy Award nomination for Inglourious Basterds. After earning a degree in music production and engineering from Berklee College of Music, Lamberti began his career as a sound editor in Hollywood. He later joined Soundelux, where he became a sound designer, and then spent 12 years at Todd-AO as a re-recording mixer. His Emmy Awards came for the long-form television projects John Adams .
Michael Semanick (re-recording mixer) is a two-time Academy Award -winning re-recording mixer. He won Oscars in 2003 for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and in 2005 for King Kong. He has nine additional Oscar nominations. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Semanick spent 15 years on staff at Skywalker Sound. He has worked independently for the past 20 years.
Vivek Sharma (associate editor) has worked in the entertainment industry for 18 years and in animation editorial for more than 14 years, serving as an assistant editor, associate editor and editor. His notable credits include Curious George, The Simpsons Movie, Monsters vs Aliens, Rise of the Guardians and Captain Underpants.
Moderator
Carolyn Giardina is tech editor at The Hollywood Reporter. She also writes its Behind the Screen blog and hosts its recently-launched Behind the Screen weekly podcast series. In December, Giardina was recognized with the Advanced Imaging Society's Distinguished Leadership Lumiere Award. Her activities have included serving on the Hollywood Professional Association board of directors and co-founding the HPA Awards.
