KDDI announces full-scale nationwide launch of Smaho de Dock self heal examination service

On August 27, 2015, KDDI announced the full-scale nationwide launch of the Smaho de Dock service, which enables users to perform their own health examinations at home.

The Smaho de Dock service offers customers the ability to conduct their own health examinations using a special home test kit and a Web service. Quick and easy to use, the service is well-suited for people who find it difficult to make time for a health examination, such as stay-at-home moms or those who are self-employed. Limited service began in April 2015 with the implementation of a demonstration project, which involved the participation of 15 municipal insurers and 3 private health insurance unions around Japan.

Through this demonstration project, it was found that the service largely tends to be used by people who regularly feel some anxiety about their own health [1]. In addition, the participating municipalities and companies have made numerous comments stating that the service is effective in enabling the early detection of disease risks and in encouraging subjects to visit medical institutions.

With the full-scale nationwide service launch, KDDI has considered the results of the demonstration project and made improvements so that the service can contribute to the improvement of health awareness among younger people and the early detection of disease risks. Customers, including those who are not au users, can visit the Smaho de Dock service website [2] to apply for tests at a price of 4,980 (tax excluded) each.

After applying, customers receive a blood test kit in the mail and use it to take a blood sample, which they then mail back. About 1 to 2 weeks later, they can use a smartphone or computer to check the results posted on their personal Web page, as well as search for nearby hospitals. Customers can also use a disease search function, which was added on August 7, 2015 through cooperation with Medley, Inc. (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Kohei Takiguchi; Co-CEO: Goichiro Toyoda M.D.). The diseases for which customers are at higher risk are shown in the test results, and they can use this search function to find accurate disease-related information compiled by more than 200 doctors.

By promoting self health management through this service and encouraging people to make a habit of regular health examinations, KDDI aims to support the health of customers and resolve broader health care issues such as controlling the rising costs of medical care in the future.

Approximately 85% of customers who used the Smaho de Dock service in certain municipalities that participated in the demonstration project had test results outside the standard value range (an overall score of B to D).
