2019 Oscar-qualifying Short DEMON Premieres, Directed by Caleb Slain

LA-based production company Eskimo artist, writer and director Caleb Slain has released his newly Oscar -qualifying short film Demon to the public, after a stint of successful film festival screenings. The project garnered the top Best Narrative Short honor from the 2017 Austin Film Festival, among others. The Oscar nominees will be announced on January 22, 2019.

Demon follows Marco, an injured man, who stumbles upon an isolated home in the pitch-blackness of the desert. Rescued by its kind owner, Marco will soon uncover a secret to rival the darkness of the desert it lies in. Slain wrote and directed the ambitious film after being inspired by a series of anonymous shorts filmed in one unbroken shot. The idea to film by moonlight and firelight was entirely his. Partnering with Panavision, cinematographer Drew Dawson and writer-director Slain settled on the Panasonic Varicam 35 and Panavision Glass to achieve their inspired goal.

The film is a cinematic one-act play shot under the full moon, and nothing else. Without the use of artificial lighting, the production schedule had to be coordinated with the moon's orbital cycle to achieve optimal lunar ambiance in the desert landscape where the film takes place.

After a year of preparation and rehearsal, the shoot took place in the desert surrounding Southern California's Johnson Valley under a December full moon. Because the very essence of Demon is to experience Marco's isolation in a 360 unbroken sequence, Slain decided to build the cabin deep in the desert in order to avoid light pollution and minimize the signs of life surrounding the filming. Battling illness, Slain contracted tuberculosis and pneumonia during filming, and myriad obstacles mainly to do with moon cycles, weather conditions, and unexplained technological issues; the film was ultimately shot in just one night. The result is a heart-thumping taut cinematic feat in both scope and vision.
