CBC's 2nd Cohort of Emerging Leaders Already Making an Impact

The second class of Capitol Broadcasting's Emerging Leaders Program launched in mid-August, and the college student interns are already showing a stellar work ethic and desire to learn. Eleven students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities comprise the 2023 cohort in the 4-month learning opportunity provided by a partnership between CBC and Leadership Triangle.

WRAL Digital Content Strategist Mandy Howard, who mentors one of the Emerging Leaders, shared about her early experience with her student. She works with Shappelle Marshall, the branded content intern in WRAL Digital Solutions.

A recent graduate (as opposed to a current student) of St. Aug's, Marshall is juggling a demanding schedule with grace and tenacity, Howard told CapCom. She jumped right in and began tackling branded content assignments, completing two stories -both approved by clients- within the first couple weeks of her internship. She has already worked on a script, ad copy and conducted interviews and she is continuing to juggle several stories with poise. There is no doubt she will reach the goal of having several published bylines by the time her internship is complete.

During Marshall's first week at WRAL Digital, she took part in a two truths and a lie icebreaker activity which Howard, a former teacher, insisted on.

From that first activity to team lunches and client meetings, Shappelle has been engaging, hardworking, dynamic and open to learn, said Howard. She has already added so much to our team, I feel very fortunate she is here.
