Ericsson and Qualcomm push the boundaries of IoT in Brazil

The two companies plan to implement IoT applications and services based on Qualcomm's MDM9206 LTE IoT global multimode modem, to help drive the growth of IoT commercialization and industry digitalization with the most advanced hardware and software solutions.

Qualcomm Technologies provides highly differentiated chipsets, reference designs and to date has more than 30 purpose-built platforms designed to make it easy for a broad array of ecosystem players to participate in the IoT ecosystem including for smart cities and industrial IoT. Additionally, Qualcomm Servicos de Telecomunicacoes Ltda., plans to launch a Reference Center for smart cities in Brazil, where these types of solutions can be tested and demonstrated.

Ericsson is leading the evolution of new technologies in Brazil in close cooperation with leading technical universities and research institutes. The company maintains an Innovation Center in the country where it has invested more than USD 1 billion over the past 15 years in R&D, developing an average of 70 projects per year, which resulted in 95 patents registered internationally.

This effort will allow both Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies to help accelerate and promote the adoption of low-power wide-area Massive IoT connectivity leveraging on existing LTE footprint that is more efficient for IoT buildout and deployment, and supports a shorter time to commercialization between carriers, developers and other key players in the ecosystem.

Solutions that are being considered for development include precision agriculture for increasing soil efficiency and crop productivity; vehicle and cargo tracking to improve the safety of transported goods and lower operating costs as well as transforming public lighting, street traffic light monitoring and connectivity for smarter cities.
