Actor, playwright, and theatre director Mncedisi Shabangu, who died on Sunday, 23 July was set to play the role of Gabisile's lover and the new villain Mthambisi Phakathi in Uzalo.

UZALO' TO REPLACE MNCEDISI SHABANGU The 53-year-old actor Mncedisi Shabangu, who died after complaining of chest pains and vomiting, had landed the role of Mthambisi Phakathi and was scheduled to start shooting on Wednesday, 27 July in Uzalo.

The SABC1 soapie informed Sowetan that Shabangu's replacement will be announced soon.

Uzalo shares more details about the character in a statement:

Mncedisi was going to play a role of a reputable businessman who amassed his wealth through crime. Phakathi always makes sure that his dark side is never revealed. He came into our world wanting nothing but revenge from the Magwaza family who took everything from him. He fell in love with Gabisile bringing friction in Nkunzi's world.

INSIDE THE NEW ROLE MTHAMBISI PHAKATHI The show adds that the introduction of Phakathi's character to the storyline was going to rock Nkunzi's (played by Masoja Msiza).

Phakathi is a reputable businessman and set to fall in love with Gabisile (Baby Cele) who has been having an on-and-off relationship with Nkunzi.

The late actor-playwright and theatre director, who received a SAFTA for his villainous role of Khulekani Ngobese also acted in plays such as Secret Agenda, Ways of Dying, Call Us Crazy, Best Wedding Ever, The Head and The Load.

Fans of the star will also recall his roles in The Lab, The Other Woman, Home Sweet Home, Rhythm City, and iNumber Number and many more.

He will be buried on Saturday, 30 July and the service will be held at Alliance Church of SA in KaNyamazane, Mpumalanga.

The publication reports that Shabangu's memorial service for Gauteng is set to be held next week on Tuesday, August 2 at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg.
