At the forefront of the myriad changes brought on by the global pandemic is the rise in remote working that has significantly impacted the broadcast sector.

A Haivision poll from September 2020 revealed that 57 per cent of media companies currently find over half of their production staff working from home. Meanwhile, 79 per cent of respondents answered that the pandemic has accelerated their organisation's transition to IP. This shift means production workflows are increasingly decentralised, spread across multiple homes and facilities. Coupled with new IP technology that scales down broadcast equipment and the associated costs, this enables broadcasters to maximise efficiency, flexibility and productivity by producing content remotely, particularly when it comes to live sporting events and with stadiums currently closed to the public, demand has never been higher.

Haivision's Complete Guide to Remote Production Over IP clearly lays out the benefits, challenges and solutions to this new set of workflows, while describing how the industry's biggest players are already leveraging Haivision's innovative technology. From established names like Fox Sports and NASCAR to Riot Games and China's Hunan TV, discover how Haivision has reimagined broadcasting for a decentralised workforce.

With hundreds of sports to cover each year, including smaller fixtures without the same scope for monetisation as marquee events, remote production over IP significantly reduces costs instead of expensive satellite equipment and on-site resources, low-latency video can be streamed over the near-ubiquitous internet and accessed from anywhere.

Unpredictable internet streams and keeping all video and audio streams in sync over IP networks can be considerable challenges, along with security concerns with online piracy on the rise, it has never been more important for broadcasters to protect their content, especially for live events. Perhaps the greatest challenge is the risk of high latency. For sport fans, hearing your neighbour celebrating a goal 10 seconds before you actually see it can be as devastating as seeing your team lose the game itself. Thanks to Haivision's radical advances in technology, these obstacles are far from insurmountable, as outlined in the Complete Guide to Remote Production Over IP.

Haivision video encoders and decoders are engineered for ultra low latency under 55ms in some cases. Combined with Haivision's Stream Sync solution, video and audio are kept in sync even when multiple cameras are in use. The Makito X4 video encoder and decoder can be configured to stream multiple channels of live event video without falling out of sync, accurate to within a single frame. Meanwhile the Haivision SRT Gateway provides secure routing of live video streams across different types of IP networks, while Haivision Hub offers a Cloud-based service for broadcast contribution, production and distribution workflows, with built-in support for the open source SRT transport protocol.

These solutions allow organisations to reduce the need for travel, amplify cost efficiencies and hire the best talent wherever they may be located enabling smooth adaptation to the changing broadcast landscape.
