RT Publishes Report of the Irish-language Working Group
RT has today published the Report of the Irish Language Working Group. In late 2012, Director General Noel Curran tasked the working group, comprised of staff from across RT and led by Board of RT member Patricia Quinn, with preparing policy recommendations for Irish-language broadcasting across all of RT 's platforms and services.
The Working Group consulted widely, and received submissions from the general public, statutory and civil society bodies with an interest in the Irish language, and members of RTEs own staff. The views expressed, which are summarised in an appendix, have informed the report which makes a series of recommendations for action. These have been welcomed and accepted by the Director-General, the Board of RT and RT 's Executive Board. The report identifies meaningful steps that can be taken in the provision of further and improved services in Irish and bi-lingually to diverse audiences on RT 's platforms.
RT Director General, Noel Curran said: The provision of programming and services in the Irish language is central to RT 's public purpose and remit. In establishing the Working Group I very much wanted us to take a fresh look at how best RT can and should deliver Irish-language content and programming across its services. I would like to thank the Working Group for their work. The final report and recommendations of the Working Group are very welcome and set out a clear future for the Irish language within RT . The recommendations have been approved by both the Executive and the Board of RT . Implementation will now be the focus.
In its recently published Five-Year Strategy (here) RT set out a clear rationale for its comprehensive portfolio of services. The portfolio is characterised by both core and complementary services, all of which are essential if RT is to meet the varied needs of multiple audiences and fulfil its obligations specified in legislation. Following the review by the Working Group and reflecting on the response by the BAI to RT 's Five-Year Strategy, RT has revised its designation of RT Raidi na Gaeltachta and made it a core RT service with a distinct remit. RT has written to the BAI to notify them of the change.
