National Film and Video Foundation CEO, Makhosazana Khanyile, resignation

Thursday 2 March 2023, Johannesburg: The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) today announced that Ms Makhosazana Khanyile has resigned as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to pursue other opportunities. Ms Khanyile is currently serving notice until 31 March 2023 and she leaves the organization with just a year left on her 5 year contract.

Since her appointment in April 2019, Ms Khanyile has played a critical role in the development, growth and success of the NFVF. During her tenure, Ms Khanyile has strengthened the NFVF's strategic partnerships which broadened the institutions' impact and reach by ensuring that the organisation secured notable partnerships with industry-leading institutions such as Netflix, MICT- SETA as well as the SABC. She also negotiated partnerships with MultiChoice which included a simulcast of the South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTAs) on SABC and Mzansi Magic, a first for South African television. Ms Khanyile was instrumental in the Thuthuka Film Fund, brokered with the Netherlands Film Fund as well as ensuring that South African filmmakers participate in the Financiers Market in the London Film Festival.

Beyond partnerships, Ms Khanyile was also instrumental in positioning the NFVF as a critical and service centric pipeline for the South African creative arts industry. She positioned the organisation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and led the team expertly over a two year period in the execution of the Presidential Economic Stimulus Program (PESP), disbursing a little over R300 million to the industry and garnering high praise for the institution from the Sport, Arts & Culture Portfolio Committee in the process.

The board has appointed Ms Thobela Mayinje, the current Head of Human Resources, as Acting Chief Executive Officer, effective from 1 April 2023, until Ms Khanyile's successor has been appointed through the appropriate recruitment processes. Ms Mayinje has been with the NFVF for 9 years and has held the role of Head of Human Resources for 3 years where she has represented the organisation at the Council's HR & Ethics Committee (HR&E). She understands the organisation's key imperatives and she frequently interacts with the industry through the various skills development initiatives. Ms Mayinje has also been entrusted with the delegation of authority by Ms Khanyile more than any other Head of Department in the organization and this has enabled her to understand all the essential governance obligations of the NFVF whilst she also established a close working relationship with the Audit & Risk Committee (ARC) and the Council in that role. Ms Mayinje will be supported by Mr Peter Makaneta, the Chief Financial Officer as well as her fellow executive members: Ms Onke Dumeko, Head of Operations and Ms Yolanda Ncokotwana, Head of Industry Development who will support her during in this transition phase.

The NFVF remains fully committed to fulfilling its legislated mandate of ensuring equitable growth for the South African film industry. The organisation will continue to provide support and strategic funding capacity for the local vibrant and promising creative arts industry.
