Head of Department - Playout Operations

Leading and managing a team of first line managers who in turn manage teams of playout operators and functionaries working shifts, Ensuring job deliverables (Key Performance Indicators) for the department are defined, communicated and implemented, Formulating and implementing a futuristic playout operations strategy in close partnership with the Broadcast Technology Division, Owning and managing the on-air quality of all the channels

Maintaining a highly skilled workforce through instilling an ethos of continuous training, development and self-improvement amongst the playout team members

Ensuring the optimisation of playout workflows to achieve optimal efficiencies and zero playout errors

Taking full ownership and responsibility for the disaster recovery plan of the playout environment and updating the action plan on a regular basis

Working closely with BTD to establish a fully functional playout facility at Samrand

Ensuring that first line managers formulate and implement Operational Procedures that contribute to an efficient work environment which is enforced at all levels

Initiating root cause investigations into all playout related on-air errors, and update stakeholders accordingly

Staying abreast of developments in the playout field through reading, research and networking, and proactively improving the operations in line with international best practice

Taking overall responsibility for the budgeting and financial control of the department, and managing variances diligently and decisively

Education & Experience

A tertiary qualification (related to an operational / technical broadcast environment) is essential

Formal management training and qualifications

At least 8 years relevant broadcast experience of which at least 3-5 years in a managerial capacity

Functional capabilities which are critical to the production of quality outputs are:

Intimate knowledge of the broadcast value chain - from purchase to playout

Intimate knowledge of workflows, workflow design and workflow re-engineering

Specialist knowledge of playout operations and systems

Operational management skills

Equipment troubleshooting and reporting

Risk assessment and remedy

Quality control SOPs and checklists

Contract management

Management of service level agreements (SLAs)

Human resources management skills

Performance management

Mentorship and coaching

Occupational health and safety

Labour relations (including discipline)

Financial management skills

Budgeting and budgeting control

Cash flow management

Supplier relations
