TVBAwards Innovation and R&D: the finalists

New to the TVBAwards 2015 is the Innovation and R&D award for outstanding technical achievement. Grass Valley, Riedel, Studer, Timeline Television, Omnitek and V-Nova have all been nominated for the award, and the winner will be announced this Thursday at the TVBAwards ceremony in central London.

Grass Valley's Densite X IP Processing Node is a broadcast-centric blade server that supports vertically accurate switching within IP. Densite -X is the signal management lynchpin in Grass Valley's Glass-to-Glass IP solution, delivering signal processing and monitoring functionality in IP workflows - an essential step in any IP migration.

The MicroN 80G media distribution network device for Riedel Communications' MediorNet has also made the Innovation and R&D award shortlist. The MicroN is designed to make it easy and economical for broadcasters to adapt their fibre-based signal transport systems to accommodate the mix of signals and variety of processing functions their operations require.

Also nominated for the award is Studer, for its Infinity technology. Marking a step forward in large-scale mixing console technology for broadcast applications, Studer's Vista X offers an intuitive user interface, offering up to up to 800 audio channels plus large integrated router and many interfaces. At the heart of the system is the Infinity DSP core, which uses CPU-based processors to provide huge numbers of DSP channels for large-scale, high-resolution audio processing and mixing.

Timeline Television's 4K Ultra HD truck is the first in Europe and has landed the company a TVBAward nomination. Initially being driven by BT Sport, the unit is available for hire for both sporting events, arts, entertainment and natural history when not in use by BT Sport. UHD 4K tech in the OB unit includes Sony HDC-4300 2/3 inch UHD 4K cameras, a Sony UHD 4K PWS-4400 server, and Fujinon UHD 4K 2/3 inch 80:1 box and 22:1 ENG lenses.

Omnitek has been recognised for this year's TVBAwards for its Ultra 4K Tool Box, which offers a development route for broadcast engineers and systems integrators to build, test and commission UHDTV-1 and other 4K systems. The Ultra has been designed to support most existing and anticipated video standards - from SD through to 4K/60 UHDTV-1 via quad HD, quad 3G, 6G, dual 6G, 12G-SDI and DisplayPort connections.

Finally, V-Nova, a relative newcomer founded in 2011, has also been nominated for the Innovation and R&D award for PERSEUS, a new approach to image and video processing, inspired by the principles underlying human vision. The technology, which launched in April 2015, differs significantly from legacy solutions in terms of its advanced lossless, multi-scale, hierarchical and low latency properties.

Details of all TVBAwards hopefuls can be found via the event website, and winners will be revealed at a ceremony this Thursday night. Tickets are still available for the TVBAwards which takes place at the Bloomsbury Ballroom in central London.
