So, what is an optical transceiver chip, anyhow?

31/03/2017

Technology moves so rapidly, it's tough for a lot of people to keep up with all the various bits and pieces that make it work.

Nobody's born knowing everything, so we're offering this brief explanation of optical transceiver chips and the role they play in making photonics - our specialty - happen.

What is an optical transceiver chip? A data conduit! Optical transceiver chips are conduits for the transmission of data. Instead of employing electrical wiring, fiber optics are used. This new generation wiring transfers information using light. The light travels through fibers or cables which are transparent.

FTTP (fiber to the premises) is made possible because of optical transceiver chips. Imagine hubs of light transmitting information. Pretty, right?

But what's really impressive about this method of sending information is its speed for internet users - super fast. Fiber optics are also able to facilitate audio communication (telephones) and receive digitally-based television broadcasts.

The dawn of OTCs. IBM first introduced the optical transceiver chip in March, 2007, demonstrating their prototype of the technology. What was different about this data conduit was the fact it could transfer information at a rate 1,600 times the speed of a stand Ethernet connection.

No. That's not a typo.

Imagine a pencil eraser. Now imagine just the flat end of that eraser. That's about the size of an optical transceiver chip. Manufactured with specialized materials, the OTC is tailor-made for an energy-conscious age. It uses next to no energy. It pairs extreme data transmission speeds with economical use of precious energy resources.

In 2010, the first optical transceiver chips were introduced to the mass consumer and business markets, revolutionizing the way we share information.

Unleashing speed. With their ability to transmit data at an incredibly high speed, what once took hours to download (HD movies, for example), can now be downloaded in seconds.

Networking applications in academic institutions and a wide variety of government agencies can also benefit from this aspect of the OTC. But imagine the possibilities for consumers and commerce. They're inestimable and revolutionary.

Pairing unprecedented speed with negligible energy use, optical transceiver chips are changing the way people are doing everything that involves the transfer of information of all kinds. At this point in time, it's clear that the revolution is upon us.

So, what is an optical transceiver chip? It's a tiny revolution with a big data impact.
