Broadcast House upgrades its broadcast facilities --

About 80 years ago, Broadcast House in the Johannesburg CBD was the nerve centre of the South African broadcasting industry. The six storey building was the playhouse for nine radio stations, making it the hub of all radio broadcasting in what was then known as the Transvaal region.

As the new era of television broadcasting was ushered in on 5 January 1976, Broadcast House was upgraded to accommodate Television Broadcast studios. It became the home to SABC 2 and 3 until the SABC finally vacated the building in 1985, at which time it had grown to eight storeys with five television production studios as well as the original nine radio studios.

Fast forward to 2016, Broadcast House is now home to Global Access, which was established in 1995 and in that time has seen the likes of Binnelanders, Skwizas, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Sam Sokolo and other South African Film and Television Award nominated sitcoms and dramas grace its studios in the years since.

Global Access has continued to ensure that their studios are in line with international broadcast standards. Under the head studio engineer, John Stevens, the studios are regularly upgraded and feature the most current and modern technology. Featuring three fully HD equipped, sound proof studios ranging from 234m to 560m in size, with a generator and UPS backup system ensuring no disruptions during recordings or live broadcasts.

When speaking to John Stevens, he said that old camera equipment made way for the latest in digital technologies, such as new Full HD Sony PMW-400 cameras, LED lights and a new enhanced mixing desk. The Sony PMW-400 has 1000TV lines and a sensitivity of F14 at 2000 lux which makes them perfect for low light conditions, and having shot productions such as Clash of the Choirs, All Access Mzanzi; Thandeka s Diary, Ses Top La and Bantu Hour on it, the quality of the pictures speak for itself.

Apart from the broadcast facilities, many clients also make use of Global Access s private channel on DStv for closed group communication as well as the digital communication tools, all managed and controlled from Broadcast House in order to leverage off the powerful infrastructure.
