South Africans cannot contain their excitement after entertainment commentator Jabu MacDonald shared the trailer of Showmax's upcoming contemporary Western drama series titled Outlaws.

OUTLAWS' CAST MEMBERS The Showmax series' Outlaws cast consists of Shaka Ilembe actors Siyabonga Shibe, Thembinkosi Mthembu, former Scandal! star Nolwazi Shange, former The River and Muvhango actress Mmabatho Mogomotsi as well as Mnqobi Kunene, Lehlohonolo Mayeza and Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku.

Shibe plays the role of the Biyela patriarch with Mmabatho Mogomotsi as the Tseole matriarch. Tebogo Tebza' Malope from Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story will direct the first two episodes.

The series shares multiple similarities to Paramount's Yellowstone drama series, which airs on M-Net (DStv 101).

The streaming platform released a first-look teaser for its upcoming contemporary Western drama series and revealed that the show will premiere on 6 September 2023, with new episodes on Wednesdays.

BACKGROUND OF THE SHOWMAX DRAMA SERIES The upcoming contemporary Western series, Outlaws is created by The River, Legacy's creators Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon from Tshedza Pictures.

Makwarela and Beynon have won five Best Scriptwriting SAFTAs in the past four years for hit shows such as The Republic and The River, which was also nominated for an International Emmy.

Outlaws is Tshedza's second Showmax Original after Adulting, which set a record for the most first-day views of any drama on the streaming service in March 2023.

The Western series is set in the lush but lawless land on the border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal and focuses on the story of two families at war with each other: the Zulu, cattle-farming Biyela clan and the Basotho, cattle-raiding Tseoles.
