Service to remember children of 96 to be aired on RT

Service to remember children of 1916 to be aired on RT 05/05/2015: An ecumenical service of remembrance & reclamation for the 40 children who were killed in the Easter Rising, April 1916, took place at St Patricks Church, in Ringsend, today & will air on RT One television & RT Radio 1 Extra this Sunday.

Among those in attendance were An Uachtar in na h ireann Michael D. Higgins, RT presenter Joe Duffy, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin Michael Jackson, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Alex White TD and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs James Reilly TD. The congregation included comedian Sil Fox and presenter Gay Byrne, and many living relatives of the child victims.

Music was from Declan O'Rourke and RT C r na n g. Children from 6th class in St Patrick's National Schools, Ringsend, lit a candle for every child who died during the Easter Rising, in 1916, and named them out loud, while holding up placards bearing the name of each known victim.

The service was led by the Reverend Ivan Tonge, who was joined by Church of Ireland Canon Barbara Fryday and Fr Michael Scott, both of whom are related to children killed in the 1916 rising.

The President paid tribute to the children who were taken before they had the chance to blossom and were denied their potential and possibility' and thanked Joe Duffy for his role in organising the service and giving people the opportunity to remember.' Joe Duffy has been personally researching the identities of all the children victims of the Rising, many of whom were previously unnamed. He will be publishing a book and presenting an RT documentary on the subject in the coming months.

Joe Duffy said: I hope this service of remembrance will lead to a memorial with the inscribed names of all the civilians killed during this seminal moment of our nations creation.'

The service will be broadcast on Sunday 10 May on RT One at 11am, and on RT Radio 1 Extra / LW252 at 11.45am.
