Pas to Freedom to screen at the nd Annual Tshwane One City Film Festival

The second edition of the historic Tshwane One City Film Festival will be held at various venues across Pretoria and neighboring townships, from 19 November to the 28 November 2015. Thabo Lekgwathi

One of the highlights of the festival will be the screening of Paths To Freedom, a pioneer and political documentary that tells the story of how in the 1960's Namibian peasants and migrant labourers created a nationalist movement, SWAPO, a guerilla army to fight the illegal occupation of their country by the erstwhile Apartheid regime. SWAPO in later years became a symbol of liberation to the masses of Namibians and one of the best allies of the ANC of South Africa.

The film features prominent political leaders and activists including Toivo ya Toivo, Mzee Kaukungwa, Gerson Veli, Ben Amthila, Hifi Pohamba and founding president Sam Nujoma who had a cordial relationship with the ANC in exile including president OR Tambo and the late Chris Hani, Umkhonto we Sizwe chief of Staff and freedom fighter.

We are extremely excited to showcase Paths to Freedom at our festival this year says Basil Dube founder and director of the Tshwane One City Film Festival.

Dube said that the history of the Namibian struggle for freedom cannot be separated from South Africa's own struggle for liberation.

We faught a common enemy through SWAPO and the ANC in exile. We had a common vision to liberate our people from the oppressive regime of Malan and Botha. When they detained and brutally tortured our MK cadres at Compol building in Pretoria, they did the same to our comrades from SWAPO of Namibia. This is a story of heroes of the struggle for liberation said Dube himself a former student activist of the 80's.

Paths to Freedom is directed by Richard Pakleppa, a well known writer and screen producer who has produced and directed many films in Africa. As part of the festival programme, Richard will be conducting a series of documentary filmmaking workshops with aspirant and emerging filmmakers from Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Mabopane, Hammanskraal and Ga-Rankuwa.

Paths to Freedom has been screened and well received by audiences in London, Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa.
