National Geographic readies In Their Own Words for Sunday debut

21st Century Fox-owned National Geographic is to premiere the archive-focused docuseries In Their Own Words, which sheds new light on some of the world's most iconic events, with three back-to-back episodes this Sunday (Feb. 17).

As previously announced, the three-part event recounts the inside stories of three headline-making stories that are told moment by moment and in first person without the use of narration or talking head.

Each episode shares intimate accounts via overlooked audio and film archival recordings to craft authentic first-person accounts from the people who lived through each historic and life-changing event. The project also interweaves cinematic re-creations.

In Their Own Words is produced by Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning Filmmaker Tom Jennings and his Los Angeles-based studio, 1895 Films, in association with storied New Zealand factual producer NHNZ.

There's no better way to tell a story than to hear it from the people who lived it, and with In Their Own Words, we hear directly from those involved, getting a detailed, moment-by-moment account of what actually happened, said 1895 Films' Jennings in a statement.

Featured stories throughout In Their Own Words include the DEA agents who brought down Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme and the Deepwater Horizon oil-rig disaster (pictured).

In episode one of In Their Own Words, DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Pe a speak candidly about taking down Pablo Escobar's Narco empire, while episode two highlights the infamous Wall Street pariah Bernie Madoff, who openly discusses how he pulled off the financial crime of the century.

The surviving crew members of the Deepwater Horizon oil-rig disaster (pictured), meanwhile, chronicle what it was like to be at the center of the fiery industrial tragedy of April 2010.

In Their Own Words is executive produced by 1895 s Jennings, who also serves as director. For National Geographic, Bernadette McDaid is executive producer and commissioning editor.

National Geographic will launch In Their Own Words with back-to-back episodes on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 8 p.m., 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET/PT.
