Harris Aims to Certify 1,000 New High-paying Apprenticeships in Workforce of the Future' Initiative

MELBOURNE, Fla., July 19, 2018 - Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) is participating in a five-year national program to increase higher-paying American jobs, with a commitment to certify apprenticeships for 1,000 new interns and existing employees.

Harris is joining other aerospace and defense companies in an initiative by the U.S. Labor Department to promote apprenticeships as a pathway to higher-paying American jobs. As part of this initiative, the Aerospace Industries Association has created an Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Program, or IRAP, covering a wide range of aerospace job skills. One of the benefits will be industry-standardized credentials that will be portable among employers.

This is investing in the workforce of the future, said Harris Chairman, President and CEO William M. Brown, who is also the AIA Board of Governors vice chairman. The initiative is good for both employers and employees, and ultimately strengthens the U.S. economy. Higher-skilled employees are the foundation of innovation.

Harris' certification will be offered through the new college graduate program, primarily professional internships in engineering and technical positions. Additional participants will be current employees training for new supervisory roles. All successful Harris participants will earn an industry-recognized professional certification. Nearly half of Harris' 17,000 employees are scientists and engineers working on advanced technology that protects warfighters and first responders, keeps air travelers safe and provides vital weather and GPS data from space. Aerospace and defense industry jobs are high paying, with an average salary of about $91,500 - 81 percent more than the national average.

The Labor Department program revolves around the concept of registered apprenticeship, which includes on-the-job training and job-related instruction in curricula tied to national skills standards. The initiative stems from a presidential executive order in June 2017 to expand apprenticeship programs and promote affordable education and rewarding jobs for U.S. workers.
