Press Release: NFVF Opens Call for Public Film Screenings on GBV Awareness as South Africa Confronts Ongoing Femicide Crisis

Johannesburg, 12 June 2025 - The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, has officially opened its Call for Public Screening proposals aimed at raising awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through the power of film.

This initiative forms part of the NFVF's commitment to social transformation through storytelling and is aligned with the national response to GBV and the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

South Africa continues to reel from devastating acts of violence against women, such as the tragic deaths of Uyinene Mrwetyana, Naeema Marshall, Olorato Mongale, Ramrathee Rajcoomar, Reeva Steenkamp, Lindiwe Chibi, Nosicelo Mtebeni, Hannah Cornelius, Tshegofatso Pule, Mandy Bailey, Melanie Jackson, Delana Cader Rawlins and Zolile Khumalo, among a multitude of others. These young women represent a national crisis that can no longer be ignored - and the NFVF stands with all those committed to turning trauma into action through film.

The NFVF believes in the power of film to provoke dialogue, healing, and systemic change. This call is not just about screening films it's about confronting societal truths and mobilising communities through a shared medium.

#PurposeForChange: A National Call to Action

Under the campaign theme #PurposeForChange, the NFVF urges South Africa's private sector, brands, and creatives to be part of the change we want to see. Now more than ever, there is a need for collective courage, and this platform serves as an invitation to create spaces for healing, remembrance, and education.

The NFVF therefore seeks to fund screenings across the country of GBV-related fiction, non-fiction and animation films, and by so doing, educate and empower communities, encourage critical dialogue and drive change through the powerful vehicle of film. These film screenings should commence during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign period in November 2025.

Application Details:

Funding Cap: R150,000 per approved application

Eligible Screening Formats: Indoor, outdoor, and drive-in

Screening Period: 25 November 2025 - 31 January 2026

Application Deadline: 30 June 2025

Number of Screenings: 1 to 3 per applicant

Eligible applicants include South African citizens whose companies are at least 51% owned and managed by themselves. Screenings must feature South African films that directly or indirectly address the impact of GBV, and must include structured audience development and post-screening engagement strategies.

Tier 2 (intermediate) and Tier 3 (emerging) public screening organisers are eligible and seeks to foster community dialogue, social cohesion, and activism.
