New RT 2 series brings kids the science behind places they love

RT 2 and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) are proud to announce Insiders a new 10-part science series for children aged 7-12, which will be shown as part of the young people's strand TRT .

Insiders explores the wow' science behind the cool events and venues that kids love. Presenters Phil Smyth, Sarah-Louise Ball and Jennifer Cleary are real-life scientists. Sarah-Louise and Phil are physicists and Jennifer is a Biochemist. They are on a mission to show kids the genius that goes into making the big events happen from match days at Croke Park to rollercoasters in Europe's most exciting theme parks.

Jennifer Cleary said: "Insiders was so much fun to make, I got to be glued upside down, fly a plane and dissect pig eyes- all in the name of science!"

Sarah-Louise Ball said: Making Insiders was a roller coaster... literally! We did some of the most terrifying things, and some of the most amazing things, all to show the science behind the scenes. From a day spent with fighter pilots, to a day spent at space camp, to a day spent learning how professional animators make movies. It was an incredible experience and I even managed to learn a few things too!

Insiders is co-funded with RT by Science Foundation Ireland through its Discover Programme and is produced by independent production company stop.watch television.

A key objective of Science Foundation Ireland's strategy Agenda 2020 is to increase the level of public engagement and understanding of science and engineering. It is with this in mind that Science Foundation Ireland is delighted to support the new Insiders series. Insiders was assessed under our Science Foundation Ireland Discover Call' by international experts and was selected based on its potential to promote and engage young people in science, engineering, technology and maths.

Over the course of the series, Insiders investigates how science helps the Irish soccer team train, how sound travels at a Strypes gig and how animation is an optical illusion. Insiders visits the Moscow State Circus to learn about forces and friction. They pit themselves against storm conditions in a sea survival tank in the National Maritime College of Ireland. And they learn about the science behind Berlin's luxury indoor tropical island.

Insiders starts on RT 2 on Wednesday 21 October at 5pm and runs for 10 weeks.
