Rising star Tshepo Matlala portrays the character of the class clown extraordinaire, Tshepo Masemola in Showmax's hit series Youngins.

TSHEPO MATLALA: CLASS CLOWN CHARACTER The popular Youngins character Tshepo Masemola will have you either cracking a smile, bursting into laughter or cringing.

When Matlala is asked how he brings his character to life, he says his passion for physical theatre and miming has made it easy for him.

You get a script, and from the writing you see, Tshepo gives birth in class (episode 7). Tshepo (as a trained performer) knows that Tshepo, the character in the story, exaggerates every moment.

Matlala adds that the assistant director and the director give him an idea of how the scene should play out. And the performer in him comes out to support Tshepo Masemola.

He fell in love with physical theatre, clowning, miming and slapstick, so he takes all those things to that performance because Tshepo's character is larger than life.

I'm very good when it comes to planned improvisation within the script. It's up to me to direct the narrative of what's supposed to happen in that scene. When I'm bored sometimes, I'm thinking, How is this thing gonna play out?

The rising star also reveals that when he's still wearing his personal clothes, he doesn't feel anything. But the moment he wears that school uniform, in the environment that he's in, with the people that he sees, something shifts.

The actor also highlights the similarities between himself and his character: In school, we used to have a feeding scheme. Our Arts and Culture teacher is teaching, and it's about to be 12 o'clock.

I have to go and eat. I haven't eaten in the morning. And I was like, This lady is eating my time! So, what must I do now?' I opened my bag, took out my empty plate, and tucked it under my jersey.

YOUNGINS' RENEWED The Showmax hit teen drama series, Youngins which stars Tshepo Matlala and Thabiso Ramotshela has been renewed for a second season.

The show also stars Rhythm City star Kealeboga Masango as it girl Buhle, Lebohang Lephatsoana as Tumelo and Toka Mtabane as Khaya.

Other actors include Thabile Tau as Sefako, Amo Telekelo as Palesa, Lihle Ngubo as Zinhle, and Katlego Moloke as Alex.

The Showmax drama series is a Tshedza Pictures production set at a fictional boarding school named Olifantsfontein High.

Youngins director Themba Mfebe (Adulting) says the show is written by young writers who live the true authentic lives of the viewers. This series is an unvarnished view of a generation that is defining itself right before our eyes.

The series premiered on Showmax on 12 February with three new episodes streaming every Thursday.
