Amsterdam: Thales to install its new-generation ticket gate on the new North/South metro line

Thales has been awarded a contract by the City of Amsterdam to supply its ticketing solution to the network's new North/South metro line. This contract follows on from another one won by Thales at the end of last year, for the design and realisation of Amsterdam Metro's supervision network.

Thales will install and equip 153 ticket gates and 45 ticket vending machines along the new line. The line is roughly ten kilometres long, includes seven metro stations and will carry around 180,000 passengers per day.

The ticket gates that Thales will supply incorporate the latest technologies from its innovative gate of the future. Most notably, the various beam sensors used on more traditional ticket gate models have been replaced with a single 3D camera per gate. This evolution will improve the flow of passengers whilst reducing equipment and ensuring greater security at an optimised cost.

The new supervision network will monitor the various systems necessary for metro use in the whole of Amsterdam, including passenger information systems, control of power generation systems, e-Ticketing and security cameras.

Thales will also be responsible for maintenance and support for both projects for a period of ten years.

The Group already has a strong presence in the ticketing market in the Netherlands, having deployed the first nationwide fare collection system from 2005 to 2009. This system allows passengers to use the same contactless smart card to take the train, bus, tram or metro anywhere in the country and is extremely popular with Dutch public transport users, with more than 17.9 million contactless smart cards sold to date, and 42 million transactions completed every week.

Thales is a global player in providing solutions and services for transport, including signalling for urban rail and main line, Integrated Communications and Supervision, and fare collection systems.
