Sonys PMW-00 jumps aboard Coach Trip

Sony has today revealed that its versatile PMW-300 camcorder was chosen for the current series of 12 Yard Productions hit show Coach Trip for Channel 4. Having proved popular since entering the European market in Autumn 2013, two of the camcorders joined Sonys industry-leading PDW-F800 camera on the show, along with other XDCAM tools, completing the move into a full XDCAM HD422 workflow for filming.

Having provided all of the acquisition tools for several consecutive series of Coach Trip, camera rental company HotCam purchased two PMW-300s through broadcast and professional solutions provider CVP.

The cameras were used for Portable Single Camera work, proving to be essential flexible tools when shooting in numerous locations. Equipped with 1/2-type Exmor Full-HD 3CMOS sensors, the PMW-300 was capable of delivering rich, detailed images, in both bright and low-light conditions. The ability to record 50Mbps HD material in MPEG HD422 was also a crucial factor in choosing the camera, as this ensured that European Broadcast Union (EBU) standards for long-form programming were met across the production.

Discussing the reasons for investing in the PMW-300, Dan Studley, technical director at HotCam, said: Weve seen very few cameras that are as portable as the PMW-300 whilst also delivering an HD 50Mbps bit rate. This investment is future-proofed for us, providing the HD image quality that our customers demand, combined with the fact that it slots easily into the incredibly popular XDCAM workflow.

Studley continued: For Coach Trip in particular, we also needed to provide a particularly durable camera, as much of the equipment used spends a significant amount of time on the road the 300 fitted the bill perfectly, with no problems whatsoever despite some fairly bumpy journeys at times.

From HotCams point of view, this is the ideal smaller camcorder to invest in for the rental market, commented Yevgeny Subbotin, account manager at CVP. Its durability means that it can go out on any number of shoots without companies worrying about its reliability, while the fact that it doesnt have a fixed lens and performs well in any number of lighting conditions means that its also incredibly versatile. Weve had excellent feedback from those customers who have purchased the PMW-300, with the combination of versatility and excellent HD quality images coming through again and again.

As well as the PMW-300, production company 12 Yard Productions chose four PDW-F800 cameras, a XDS-PD1000 XDCAM deck and six PDW-F1600 XDCAM Professional Disc recorder for the show. By using XDCAM tools across the production, 12 Yard were able to take advantage of the XDCAM workflow, allowing them to easily ingest, store, and export content as data files.

Coach Trip is currently showing on Channel 4 on weekdays at 5pm until Friday 7th March.
